The only firmware that I can load and get my router to even see any type of life is:
Firmware:
DD-WRT v3.0-r28813 (01/29/16)
but when i look at my wireless page it shows the radio is turned OFF. The lights on the router is showing that they are on; however, when I look for any wireless signal from the router I can not find one. is there any way to force the wireless on? I'm new to DD-WRT firmware.
Thanks,
Send me the screen shot of wireless setings page, you have on your router ?
I have the same issue exatly like yours and was able to get radio working using the followingI steps:
You'll need to open R8500 hoosing and connect to it via a USB TTL adapter.
Although the thread is writtenf for R8000 but essentially the picture gives you some good ideas. See: https://www.myopenrouter.com/article/how-set-serial-console-netgear-r8000
For how to open R8500 housing, follow this: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/R8500-bricked/td...
To ensure that radio in ON, make sure to power OFF the router between the command of nvram erase at CFE and power ON again for the command TFTPD.
It took me a couple of days and lot of perseverance. :-) The power off and on again in between commands was provided by KONG in one the threads on DD-WRT forum I stumbled upon duirg a related search.
Good luck.

Sorry. Duplicated.
Were you able to fix this issue? I'm stuck right here where you are. I connect with CFE, do a nvram erase and get code 0, unplug the power, get back into CFE and then apply the firmware and I stilll cannot see any wireless :/
