"The Firmware Is Not Compatible With Your Router" Error

Hey Awesome Folks,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere.  I have a brand-new, out-of the box R8000. Every Kong DD-WRT .chk file I have tried flashing through Netgear's firmware has failed.  I have tried six different file versions from February, 2017 going back to March, 2016. I even tried a version from November, 2014. Each file made the Netgear GUI return the same error: "The Firmware Is Not Compatible With Your Router. Error-1". Just to be sure, I have reset the Netgear to factory default settings twice. Here is a screenshot of the error message: https://goo.gl/mg2QB7 . Any advice you may have is greatly appreciated.  Thanks for all the great info on the forums. I purchased the R8000 based the advice I've read here. (Upgrading from a first-generation WNDR3700 that I've had for eight years.)

Same result with the Asus-Merlin-KoolShare initial .chk file. I could really use some troubleshooting ideas here.  Thanks.

Tried reverting to an older version (1.0.0.46_1.0.17) of the netgear firmware.  I got the same error.  I am out of ideas.  Consider this unresolved.

Have you performed 30/30/30 reset prior to flashing?

Make sure you have the latest chk for the R8000.

Use google chrome to flash seems to be the most stable browser for flashing.

On the bottom does your router say made in china or vietnam? What is the the string of numbers below where the router was made?

You could have a different revision that is not compatable with dd-wrt.

Thank you! Below are the answers to the questions.

Have you performed 30/30/30 reset prior to flashing?

Yes

Make sure you have the latest chk for the R8000.

I have the latest chk for the R8000

Use google chrome to flash seems to be the most stable browser for flashing.

Using Chrome did not work

On the bottom does your router say made in china or vietnam? What is the the string of numbers below where the router was made?

Made in Vietnam. There are no numbers below where the router was made. The UPC is 606449104325. The full model number is R8000-100NAS. The TA(?) is 100-20780-01R17

You could have a different revision that is not compatable with dd-wrt.

Is there a way to tell? How do I ensure that if I purchase another R8000 that it will be compatible with DD-WRT? What do I look for? Thank you for presenting questions I hadn't thought to ask myself.

I just bought an R8000. I also get the same message with all older Netgear stock firmwares, as well as Tomato and DD-WRT firmwares. Made in Vietnam. There are no numbers below where the router was made. The UPC is 606449104325. The full model number is R8000-100NAS. My TA is 100-20780-01R16

Sorry that its been a bit

Sorry that its been a bit since i have been on, based on your information, the only thing it could be is the firmware chip is hard coded to disallow older firmware versions to be installed. The figure this out you will have to get into the router CFE terminal and try to flash from there if it disallows you and give you an error cannot flash older version firmware. The only way to convert to dd-wrt would be using TTL to USB and opening up your router and using putty to flash the router, this will be complicated and also void your warranty if you have one. If your no willing to take these steps i sugguest you invest into a different router.

Looking at the tech info,

Looking at the tech info, there seems to be a 8000 (branded as 3200AC) and a 8000P (branded as 4000AC). According to Wikidev both of those are made in China. So I am puzzled about what that router is...

Just found this issue with a

Just found this issue with a R8000 i bought in interum while awaiting a replacement from netgear (hardware failure). The i had advanced tomato on the old one, and had changed stock firmaware versions numerous times all the way up to 1.0.4.12, and numerous opensource versions as well. The new one will only downgrade to 1.0.4.12, which is what it came with I do believe.

Both routers say made in vietnam, and 272-12664-01

The difference is the old one's TA is 100-20780-01R13

                                      And the new is 100-20780-01R16

I would submit that it is propably the hardware Revisions that are the issue (R16 and R17 at least)

Anyone have an R 14 or 15? (Heck how many people still have the box to find out?)

Looking at the above referenced post, I see that the DD-WRT firmware they used was being rejected because it IDs as version 1.0.2.99_1.1.99

Anyone know where in the source that is set?

Could we change the dd-wrt, fresh tomamato, adv tomato, etc. source to reflect a version higher than 1.0.4.12_10.1.46 and recompile the .chk?

So after speaking with

So after speaking with netgear its clear that this is both an intentional and melicious attack on the DD-WRT community. Acording to the support representative the newer stock firmware has version checking to prevent users from ""Acidentally"" downgrading to insecure firmware. I nearly flipped out at this because its pretty impossible to accidentally install old firmware and the only users that would need to be ""Protected"" would not even know what firmware is. So basically whats needed is for the firmware authors to find a way of spoofing the version enough to fool the firmware into thinking its a netgear revision higher than the current stock FW. Probibally file a petition as well and see if we can get the EFF to put pressure on Netgear for this $%^& move

I had the same problem and

I had the same problem and the reason you can't flash any firmware is because your board id got corrupted so, you’ll have to manually type it in the CFE. Let me know if you need introductions.

Is this issue just restricted

Is this issue just restricted to the R8000 or can we expect this spreading to the other Netgear routers?

But i could certainly use

But i could certainly use step by step instructions on getting around this problem preferably instructions that do not use acronyms or assume I know much about houter hardware. I have used DD-WRT before but I really have little experiance with TFTP and PUTTY

You’ll have to go back to OFW

You’ll have to go back to OFW, and look for telenable, to be able to telnet to your router, then through putty(which btw is really easy to use) run the comand: burnboardid (actual board id), I can get the board id for you if u get to this point

Alex0597
Alex0597's picture
1) Go back to OFW

1) Go back to OFW

2) Download telnet from here http://www.mediafire.com/file/tcen54n6k66yu58/telnetenable2.zip

3) telnetenable2.exe <IP> <MAC> <Username> <Password>. Run this command on CMD on the same forlder that u have the telenable2.exe, you’ll have to fill your ip address, mac and so on with your personal settings.

4) Download putty and telnet to the router.

5) Sign into your router with your username and password.

6) burnboardid. Run that command to get your current board id, if it says some gibberish dont worry, thats what you’re fixing.

I don’t remember what the board id for R8000 is but I’ll look and let u know.

Once telnet is enabled does

Once telnet is enabled does the board id need to be flashed or can telnet be used to just drop the DD-WRT firmware onto the router bypasing the Genie

You could but fixing the board id should be your priority to avoid any future bricks.

I am not sure what the id is

I am not sure what the id is supposed to be but when I ran the board id command i got Board ID - ? as the return

so yeah if you have the correct board id for the R8000 it would help

mikeloeven

also does telnetenable2

also does telnetenable2 enable telnet perminantly or will it need to be run each time I reboot the router / flash firmware
