Current status of R8000 stock and custom firmwares

Hi,

I would like to know what's the current status of the available firmwares for R8000 regarding stability, known issues, security issues and advantages/disadvantages.

I have read about the unflashable "Made in Vietnam" models, many issues with Kong, poor feedback about Tomato, Merlin and K3 builds.

Most of the posts are old, so what's the current situation in 2019?
Is it worth to try the custom firmwares?
Or should I install the stock firmware V1.0.4.28_10.1.54?

If you have a list of all the known issues of the latest firmwares would be great.

I was able to flash my Vietnam model with custom firmware by flashing it with openWRT first as there is a patched version which tricks the stock firmware into thinking openWRT is a newer version of the stock firmware. From openWRT you can then flash Tomato, DD-WRT etc.
