R7000: Tomato or DD-WRT? Kong or BrainSlayer?

Fed up with NetGear's stock FW stumbles (60, 64, 88). Please advise as to what open source FW would be the best.

Many thanks!

To say which is the best would suggest others are bad.  The best is what works for you or suits your needs.  Generally they are all great.

I had generally been happy with Kong's dd-wrt but am currently running fresh tomato since Xwrt-Vortex apprently damaged my router - don't use xwrt-vortex

A few months ago I saw that

A few months ago I saw that Kong was no longer doing any updates for R7000. Is this still true?

Thanks

Not even remotly true.

Not even remotly true.

The releases in the past did overwrite routers CFE, however now this is not the case anymore. It is necessary to flash CFE in the begining, so you have to make a backup of your original one at first. But then, in my experience, this is by far the best firmware there is possible to flash on R7000.

But...

Because it is a port of ASUS/Merlin firmware it is not really "legal", so no support for your further questions here or on SMB forum... Further info can be found on Xvortex homepage.

If past releases did

If past releases did overwrite CFE, then wouldn't it be at least remotely true?  ...if not completly?

There was no mention "so you have to make a backup of your original one at first"

The firmware wan't terrible, but in my experience, not "by far" great :(  considering it overwrote my CFE - it's absolutly shamful!  Sadlly disapointed I can no longer run dd-wrt :(

You CAN run DD-WRT. DD-WRT

You CAN run DD-WRT. DD-WRT never overwrote the CFE. The only firmware that overwrote the CFE was Xvortex. Xvortex is a ILLEGAL Firmware. You have No access to source code, and it uses modules Licensed only to ASUS on Netgear routers.

Use DD-WRT or Freshtomato, they both have there strong and weak points, I have used both.
