.trx file For Netgear R6400

I'm having a difficult time finding the correct file to flash the R6400 back to the Original firmware.

The problem is I am using the original firmware from Netgear.

http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/R6400#searchResults

Doing this I get an error  /tmp/flashQeG6sO: Bad trx header.

In my serach I found the .trx files for the R6250, R6300v2, R7000 but nothing for the R6400.

I follow the instructions from youtube, but can't find the .trx file to complete it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNIpBJPRogY

Where can I find the .trx file or the right original firmware for the R6400?

Shibby has never posted a

Shibby has never posted a "back to original" image for the R6400. I've asked him multiple times but he didn't answer

So is there any other way to get back to original without using a .trx file?

yes, putting the router in

yes, putting the router in recovery mode and using TFTP to flash the stock firmware

Thanks for your help but I'm

Thanks for your help but I'm a bit new to this and still learning.

What are the steps to accomplish this?

it's a delicate procedure,

it's a delicate procedure, requiring to open the device. Below a step by step for the R7000/R6300v2 (which should apply for the R6400 too)

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help Microchip, you've been very helpful. This procedure seems a bit much. Still deciding if I'll do it or just get a R7000.

This would be much simpler if there was a .trx file.

I also recommend the R7000.

I also recommend the R7000. It's the best supported model by 3rd party firmware

in the future, if you want to easily run a third party firmware and be able to equally easy get back to stock, I'd advise to do a bit of research before buying and flashing it. Also make absolutely sure that you can get back to stock easily, not just from stock to third party

As I said, I asked Shibby a few times to upload the back to stock for the R6400 and R6220. He did so for the latter but not for the former and I can't seem to reach him

I did reseach and thought I

I did reseach and thought I downloaded the stock file from this site as well. To make matters worst, what I read it seemed it would be easy to get back to stock.

I followed the instructions from youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNIpBJPRogY

When I flash the file provided I got an error message.

Am I doing something wrong here?

no you're not doing something

no you're not doing something wrong. But you need a specific firmware to go back to stock and only shibby provides it but not for the R6400 yet. The file you got from the "update" link above is not valid. Only files from the link below are but there's no such one for the R6400

What about the file linked to

those provide only the initial and the AIO. No back to stock one

mlord thanks for your help.

mlord thanks for your help. But if you are talking about those files in the link below, they don't work on the R6400.

If you need to flash back to NETGEAR stock firmware, the original "back to Genie" flash file can be downloaded here

http://update.groov.pl/r6400/

I tried them and I got an error message telling me that I need to use  a .trx file.

The files on that link you provided are .7z files

Every model has a specific

Every model has a specific back to stock firmware. There is no global firmware that can be flashed on all models and return back to stock. This is because every model uses a different firmware. They share some stuff, but also a lot is different. It's the same with the stock firmware. You can't flash the stock for the R6400 on the R7000 for example

.7z files are compressed

.7z files are compressed archives, similar to .zip files.

So just extract the contents (eg. on Linux, "7z e back-to-genie.7z"), and you will find:

A .bin file that you can flash to install DD-WRT:  dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD_128K.bin

A .chk file that DD-WRT can then flash to return-to-stock:  R6400-V1.0.0.26_1.0.14.chk

Cheers

mlord what you are saying is,

mlord what you are saying is, inorder to get "back to Genie" I first have to flash to install DD-WRT by flashing

the file found on the link below.

http://update.groov.pl/r6400/

I did try to flash this file and it did not work.  I got an error message telling me that I need to use  a .trx file.

I followed the instructions from this youtube video.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNIpBJPRogY

No.  As I tried to say

No.  As I tried to say earlier, a .7z file like that one is actually like a .zip archive.  You have to unpack it and use the contents instead of the .7z file.

To make it easier for you, I have unpacked it, added a README.txt, and placed it all on my server now:   http://rtr.ca/r6400/revert_to_factory/

You can grab the individual files from there if you don't have an easy way to extract them from .7z file above.

Cheers

Hi All,

Hi All,

It seems that update.groov.pl is down. I need to reflash my R400 before sending it back. Would anyone be able to send me a working link to the .7z file?

Many thanks!
