that's not a question that

that's not a question that can be easily answered. it's mostly based on preference. DD-WRT uses a newer kernel and wireless drivers while Tomato sticks to whatever Braodcom provides, hence for it having hardware acceleration which is needed for anything above 300 Mbps speeds. I have little experience with DD-WRT but I know Tomato very well and it provides virtually everything that DD-WRT provides. DD-WRT has also a bigger development community (AFAIK). And it has a slightly faster release cycle

in the end, you have to make a choice yourself and see which fits your needs better. Both are decent firmware that also use up-to-date components compared to vendor firmware, which often uses (highly) outdated ones, introducing potentionally security issues. Vendor firmware is not known very much for updating something that works

AIO = All In One = Tomato

AIO = All In One = Tomato with everything and the kitchen sink - recommended for general use

VPN = slimmed-down Tomato version focusing a lot on VPN use

Xwrt-Vortex, which is a port

Xwrt-Vortex, which is a port of Asuswrt-Merlin is also pretty good. I have this on one R7000 and Advanced Tomato on another R7000 and it is hard to split them for performance.

Both interfaces look entirely different but really they are pretty similar.

Kudos to kong. Had been

Kudos to kong. Had been waiting for DD-WRT for the R7000 and it's running like a charm. I do not make use of the more advanced features of the firmware, but I've used it on several router models over the years and it is unequalled for its stability. Advanced Tomato is a great package as well (with a very pleasant and elegant interface), but I'm happy to be "home." (I encourage you to make a donation to the coders - however modest it may be). Cheers.

I did try out both DD-WRT and

I did try out both DD-WRT and Advanced Tomato for the R7000. I had some nasty LAN / WAN connection time outs with DD-WRT after a couple of hours. So I ended up with the Advanced Tomato VPN edition which is very stable. I also have to say that I only use the wired connection with openvpn, no wlan with the R7000. So Tomato is more stable in my case & perception! And yes, I also suggest you donate to the fw developers!
