Help for a non tech person with a netgear router

Hi my N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router —WNDR4000 will not maintain a wireless connection.  I am not a techy person.  Just someone who had help setting this up about 3 years ago and about 6 to 8 weeks ago the wireless network in my house that I use to store files on a computer upstairs and a laptop downstairs has stopped staying connected.

The connection comes and goes, since last night it will not connect at all.  I worked with my DSL provider this morning as the DSL signal comes into a Westell model 327W and that appears not to me the issue.  My question:

What should I do to troubleshoot the issue? or do I just need to but a new route?

If I need a new router - what is recommended and how do I find someone to reconnect that network as it is?

I hope this type of question is okay to post here. I tried to call netgear and could not get help today.  This is how I work so I need a quick solution. Thank you.

I can't answer all your

I can't answer all your questions, but may have a useful suggestion or two. :)

If your connection started getting worse, then certainly it could be your router which is faulty. However, sometimes this can also happen if there is something close by which is making a change. A microwave oven, a wireless or cell phone, or perhaps just some metal objects, can make a difference. Did something get moved? Anyway, those are just some ideas which could save you money if they are right.

As for a new router. If it is not a critical situation, then most work just fine. They are also really quite easy to set up and will, in most cases, set themselves up using DHCP, which is likely the default, then you just need to pick a password and chose an encryption. Don't be afraid to try it on your own. Good luck!
