Need to buy a new Router - Wireless N or G?

I dont understand this, Our Internet Speed is ~ 12Mbps. Wireless G Router is ~ 54Mbps. should'nt G Router be good enough for internet?

Yes - but keep in mind that "Wireless G" has a carrier speed of (up to) 54 Mb/s, the data rate is lower. On averge you'll get about 20-25 Mb/s of data speed.

Yes, just because it says 54 doesn't mean thats what throughput you get, thats link rate, throughput is as Hands of Blue said. and another thing to keep in mind is when you get more than 2-3 people using your wireless, it splits up that rate. Thus some peoples need for N routers.

Hi, i am looking to connect my new xbox (wireless n) to my adsl2 connection coming through my pc, i need a new modem/router combo, to replace my old old modem for my pc and to give me wireless through the house. Im guessing wireless N. Does my pc need to have a n capable network card or how does that work? I also want my old laptop to run off the wireless network. Bit confused as to whether i just buy the N router/modem combo and that's it or whether i need these wireless adapters for my pc and laptop?

If you want to connect with wireless then the client needs to have a wireless adapter. Any laptop from the last 3 or 4 years should have one. If not then adding one shouldn't be difficult, at a pinch you can just get a USB one. The same goes for the desktop, though if the location is suitable you may just want to run a network cable.

As for the N, G etc, you'll only get the highest speeds if everything uses N, but you'll still be able to connect with a G (or even a B) client.

Hi, thanks for your reply. So my pc is 3 or 4 years old, has a modem running my adsl2 plugged into it, i want to replace that with this adls2 modem/router combo. So will it still need an adaptor even if its plugged into it via usb/ethernet?

If it's connected by ethernet you won't need an adapter. You only need one if you want to connect by wireless (and your computer doesn't have wireless already).
