USB Drive folders not visible when connected back to PC.

Hi,

I am using the WNR3500L router and had connected my 1TB WB MY Book essential drive to the router and was able to access the files through HTTP and FTP.

Later when I removed my drive and connect it directly to my PC i am unable to view any files that are existing.  The 1TB drive has around 600GB of data. the Windows PC shows that 600GB is taken up and around 360GB is free like normal. But when i click and go into the drive all the folders and files are missing or I should say not visible.

I connected it back to my router and then again i am able to view these files through HTTP or FTP links.

Please let me know how to fix this issue with the USB drive so that i can connect it to my PC and use it llike a normal drive and I have very important data in the drive which i am unable to access through the regular connection.

I have a suspicion it has something to do with access control. Initally when i had connected the drive to the router i had the password protection enabled. Later I had removed the password protection too.It still does not show up any files and folders when being directly connected to the PC.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,

TMAX

Sounds like a acl issue, if

Sounds like a acl issue, if the ntfs attribute table is broken and acl attributes are missing you will see this kind of behaviour.

Linuxboxes are usualy able to display and copy the files in such a case. So if you need to access the data you could also use a linux live cd and then copy the data to another volume. Copying writes correct acl on the destination drive.

Kong, Thanks for the tip off.

Kong, Thanks for the tip off. I have another Ubuntu system. I connected the drive to Ubuntu system. Like you said the files and folders are well visible. I am able to copy in and out of it. But when i connected it back to the Windows system. it is still invisble. Is there a way to fix the ACLs when connected to the Linux system.

BTW the File system on the USB device in FAT32 and not NTFS. If that info help.

Any tip off on how to fix that File System problem.

Did you copy using natilus or

Did you copy using natilus or any other gui tool or did you use cp command.
It could be that the files were copied with preserve flag to preserve file attributes.

If it is a FAT filesystem, then it is very strange, there you just have simple attributes like hidden,system... no extra user acls which could confuse the windows FAT driver, I have seen malware that can hide files by placing a special crafted file in the same folder. So I would try to just copy a simple file and make sure you just use a simple copy, in addition to that you could copy from fat to ntfs etc.

Kong, I copied using natilus.

Kong, I copied using natilus. I did not use the CP command. Maybe I will try the CP method.

Not sure where to go from here.
