Which firmware is the best?

Hi guys,

First, i want to say that I'm very happy with the WNR3500L .

I tested almost all available firmwares for it but Victeck's Tomato RAF1.28.8662 MIPSR2_RAF K26 USB Ext seems to be the most stable for me.

Toastman's version is also nice but as soon as I use the standard QoS feature, I get weired slowdowns and sometimes it even stops my http browsing (when downloading torrents OR direct download from hosting sites like megaupload..)

It is possible that I will need to tweak Toastman's firmware settings to really get juice out of it but Victek did the work.

Only problem is the the wireless throughput is LOW.

If I'm lucky, I get 2.1MBps when I transfer files from one PC to another (main PC is connected by 100mbps ethernet to the router and the other connected wireless with an Edimax N WNIC.

The connection status say: 300mbps..

What am I doing wrong? Is there a better firmware for the throughput issue?

I tried it with WMM on and off.

Thanks guys, hoping for a solution.

Therre were many posts

Therre were many posts concerning wireless and Tomato/DD-WRT. Just search...

The best firmware for wireless is NATIVE NETGEAR one. It uses proprietary adapted drivers, and speed is excellent.

The best firmware for writing/reading a NTFS formatted disk is NATIVE NETGEAR one. Same reason.

As long as opensource can't have access to same tools/drivers than original firmwares ther will be a difference.

Tomato tried to improve wireless speed by including an optimized driver with new functions, but it was to instable and was removed. Try to desactivate Interference Mitigation in Advanced Wireless menu and to reduce Channel Width to 20 MHz.

Try also latest Toastman's firmware, with a new QoS added besides Victek's one.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried you recommendations of disabling Interference Mitigation and to reduce Channel Width to 20 MHz but I did not notice any change.

I gave it a shot and reloaded the default NETGEAR firmware and... throughput went up.

It is now averaging around 5MBps and im very happy with that.

I dont know how stable it is and how well it manages the QoS so only time will tell.

Thanks a lot for the advices!
