Hi all,
I've just bought a WNR3500Lv2 router and I'm very happy with it.
I plan to change the firmware with an open source one. I actually hesitate between DD-WRT and Shibby Tomato. And when I read the list of all possible problems that may occur... I also hesitate with keeping the native netgear firmware :/
I would like to have some advice from WNR3500Lv2 users and what they think about the firmware they chose.
Basically, it's the same discussion than this (old) thread : http://www.myopenrouter.com/forum/thread/38534/Which-firmware-Tomato-or-...
Sadly, there is no answer... :( But I think that this discussion could be very useful for new users (like me ^^)
I want to use my router for having an ssh access and monitoring what happen on my network. I don't know which firmware answers these two points best. Also, I bought it to practice networking (it's very more effective than just reading book ^^)
- Shibby Tomato :
I've read on this forum that some users have some difficulties to use the gigabit LAN and can not make it faster than 100 Mbit/s... Do you experiment the same issue ? Perhaps it's not recurring... Moreover some people complained about the WiFi quality...
On the contrary, the rating on the download page is very good (see : http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/list?sort=date&cat=75).
- DD-WRT :
In the router database, the rating is very bad (see http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/list?sort=date&cat=74). And according to the commuty, the WNR3500Lv2 is actually not fully supported by DD-WRT... What does that mean ? Does some of you actually use this firmware ?
Thanks a lot for any advice you could give me :)
the WNR3500Lv2 is actually not fully supported by DD-WRT you have to compile the code your self. there are guides to this is searche after this.
this is all what you have to use to go to dd-wrt

i have the same router and i use this toastman version of tomato (thanks Toastman:)
http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/37027/Toastman-s-Tomato-Firmware-fo...
this is very stabel and im very happy with it so far, i use the pptp vpn client, an this is working very good,
acordin to the lan speed i dont know if there are problems im using this device on a giga switch and, do not use the build in switch.
about the wifi in the toastman version, i can say it very good, im experiencing no problems at all.
I bought one of these about a month ago and am running Shibby's latest tomato build on it. Stability is fine and everything that I use works great, including ssh, logging, web monitoring, etc.
Also, I installed Optware on a USB thumb drive so I can use Linux tools that I am more familiar with like bash and nano instead of zsh and vi. Loving it so far.
