Where can I find the bin files for upgrading existing dd-wrt installation to the latest build. All that I can find are the chk files for initial install.

Hi - I had the same question for the same Netgear model (R6700). This site gives a list of links you can download Netgear firmware from :
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Firmware_FAQ#Where_do_I_download_...
Scroll down to the section "Where do I download firmware?" And then there are some links to the Main (BrainSlayer) Builds. I used the second link:
https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/
Then I navigated to 2018 and selected one of the later builds for the R6700, downloaded it, and it successfully updated the firmware. Hope this helps!
