For me, I have been using serial connection, and tftpd in order to reflash the stock firmware since the dd-wrt update page will not actually apply the firmware update when uploading the stock firmware.

Not sure which dd-wrt version you tested, but all official dd-wrt builds support flashing back to netgear.
This feature has been thoroughly tested on all models dd-wrt officially supports. But it is only tested if no other 3rd party firmware was installed.
Thus netgear -> official dd-wrt -> netgear
works. We can't guarantee, that it still work if you had:
netgear -> custom dd-wrt -> official dd-wrt -> netgear
Flashing back will check parts of the board info and the info in the build that is beeing flashed. If some of the board info is missing then the check will fail. It will also fail, if the wrong netgear firmware is uploaded.
I guess it may have been some weirdness, I had the serial connected at the time

other than that, it remained fully functional, after a few more attempts at going back to the update page, I just restarted the router and did a tftp to flash the netgear firmware.
Didn't spend much time on it since the R7000 is my main router, and currently my best performing router.
I don't use dd-wrt full time yet because it does not support my Sandisk SDCZ80-016G USB 3.0 16GB flash drive very well (detection of it is hit or miss, and when it does detect it, heading to the share (e.g., \\192.168.1.1) saving to the network share, will not actually get any data to the flashdrive.
I also have tried reverting to stock using dd-wrt's 'Firmware Upgrade' tab and it didn't work for me. Using build 23720M. Also tried it with a firmware from about 1 month ago and it had the same problem.
Have tried R7000-V1.0.0.96_1.0.15 and R7000-V1.0.3.24_1.1.20 but no difference. It also only say'upgrade sucessful' when I upload the zip file of stock firmware, not a .chk file. But I upgraded to dd-wrt 23720M using a .chk file fine... wierd.

Any way of downgrading without doing tftp to flash??
You have to upload the chk not zip file.
Sorry, wasn't very clear. When I upload the chk version of the stock firmware (1.0.0.96 and 1.0.3.24) they both get a result of "Update Failed" and the dd-wrt configuration stays the same.
I thought maybe I was doing something wrong so I uploaded the zip version of both and I get "Upgrade Successful" and the router reboots to dd-wrt and wipes the configuration (i get the reset admin password page and all setings wiped).
Login via telnet or ssh and show me the output of:
head /dev/mtd4ro | grep NET
Output is:
U12H270T00_NETGEAR
NETGEAR78
NETGEAR78-5G
Which is what I remember the default AP names were. Currently showing just a single 'dd-wrt' AP in Win7-64bit (wl0 and wl1 are both called 'dd-wrt').

The reason why a zip does not report a failure is because there is no fault return for that although it won't be flashes, with the chk, I added a model detection as I seen it before, that people try to upload builds for a V1 to a V2 e.g. R6300V1/R6300V2.
Anyways, the last output was ok, thus at least tftp will still work. Now do this:
nvram set board_id=U12H270T00_NETGEAR
nvram commit
try to flash the netgear *.chk now and see if it works.

Uploaded 'R7000-V1.0.0.96_1.0.15.chk' and I get 'Upgrade Failed'
Uploaded 'R7000-V1.0.3.24_1.1.20.chk' and uploads with chrome - i can see the 'uploading XX%' in the bottom left of the browser window - but then the counter just counts down and nothing happens, it just sits on 'Upgrading firmware... Please Wait' and after a while a popup says upgrade failed. After the upload the power led blinks orange once per second for 3 seconds (3 times) and then stays white for 3 seconds. If I reload the tab it just goes back to the gui.
I've checked the MD5 hashes for both chks and they're good.
EDIT: it cycles through the blinking forever until a reset. Nothing in the syslog during firmware upgrade other than "ppptd daemon successfully stopped" and "process monitor sucessfully started"

Also it was a 'ww' firmware version, not a 'us' version. I'm guessing that probably helped.

OK, that would make sense, maybe the ww and us have a different signature to prevent flashing a us version on on us:-) I'll have a look at them.
Update: I checked out the firmwares, they have a different header thus right now you can only restore a us version. I'm not sure yet if non us models that have non us firmware allow flashing of dd-wrt. It is not a big deal to change that, but I need to know if this is the case as we would need to offer two initial chk versions for flashing oem->dd-wrt
Think this is what was up. I'm in Australia so I guess I have a non-us version. I installed dd-wrt fine but was trying to update via dd-wrt with a us version, which didn't work (just got the firmware via links in forums, instead of actually thinking about it). The version that worked for me was a ww one.
dd-wrt worked fine for me except for a few issues with the AC/5GHz channel. Choosing a higher channel let me get a 867Mbps connection rate for an Intel 7260AC. I only got 20MB/s on this though, so I thought I'd try the new stock firmware to compare. Now that it works I get 16-18MB/s. Not sure if this is the expected speed with overheads, as it seems pretty damn far off from what I expected. Network performance monitor (via task manager) only registers about 20-25% of the network bandwidth being used.
Let me know if you need anything tested. Better support than any other router I've had!
In dd-wrt forum I got reports that maximum throughput with 7260AC is ~40MB/s. Since I don't have the card I can't tell you what settings you need. But my Intel 6300 does 25MB/s on 5G 450mbps connection rate, but I have to turn off beamforming as the intel driver still has a problem. Thus you definitely should get more throughput.
The info from the command you gave me says you have a US version and thus only flashing back to the us version works. I just added some code in order to allow flashing a ww version in case the router is a ww version.
