Today, NETGEAR announced the wide, general availability of its HD Powerline networking solutions, consisting of either the Powerline HD Plus adapter kit (HDXB111) or the Powerline AV Enternet Adapter kit (XAVB101).

So.. A number of firmwares now available for WGR614L. Tomato, DD-WRT has already been released and developers are working on openwrt also. Besides this a custom MOR firmware is available also. So you can enjoy the freedom of the open-source firmwares with this router totally. Change your router in the way you want....

I have tried all of the firmwares released in this site and prepared a feature wise comparison list. So that you can pick the best firmwares according to your requirement. Here is the list..

A new independent, custom firmware build for the NETGEAR WGR614L Open Source Router has been published and is available for download!

This new firmware is based on Broadcom code but modified to support the WGR614L.

As a developer what saves my board and day most of the time is the serial console and boot-loaders’ ability to download/upload firmware. Even when the something goes badly wrong with the firmware you just compiled - you can use the boot loader to get back to a running firmware and try to debug your under development firmwares.

WGR614L Firmware Image Creation

Some of you have already noticed that WGR614L firmware uses a .chk extension. Let us go through the steps that is needed to create a firmware image in .chk format.

Most of the broadcom hardware uses a TRX style fimware. Netgear's WGR614L linux based open source router's .chk is also based on the same TRX format - but does add the following interesting improvements

KWGR614 is powered by the same RTL8651B processor used in the high performance Netgear Rangemax WPNT834 Access Point. Besides the RTL86151B SoC at 200 MHz, KWGR614 also sports the RTL8185L/RTL8225 WiFi chipset supporting WPA2-PSK and a generous 4 MB Flash/16MB of SDRAM enough to run many additional applications.
