DD-WRT WGR614L

Noticed this thread on DD-WRT forum. Wanted to bring in the discussion here.

-Nachi

DD-WRT supports the bcm5354 based routers, but not sure if it already supports the netgear WGR614L open source router. Can anyone through some ideas here?

WGR614L has community around it at http://www.myopenrouter.com and you may be able to get some answers on this there too.

Here is what I can find out about WGR614L at here.

"A new router platform WGR614L is coming soon and what got me excited is that this new platform is well suited for many excellent community developed firmwares like like OpenWRT, Sveasoft, DD-WRT, Tomato. This Broadcom 5354 SoC based router has 4MB flash and 16MB SDRAM - good enough to run most of these popular firmwares. In fact most of the firmwares that runs on Linksys WRT54GL should be easily (relatively speaking) portable to WGR614L."

DD-WRT supports the bcm5354 chipsets - but not sure if the firmware can be run on this rotuer unmodified.

The also have a alpha version of Tomato firmware available here.

Hi,

Hi,

I have compiled the DD-WRT source but not courageous enough to burn the image to flash. Is it possible to run the image from RAM. Actually I would like to run DD-WRT image in the WGR614v8.  Can anybody please come up with some ideas.

Thanks,

I have gone through the DD-WRT forum as well. There I have been referenced to a Netgear 614L compatible DD-WRT version. I download this image but got a panic. It shows 'Unable to mount rootfs' and gets rebooted. Can anybody give some idea - what would be the probable cause.  However I will also modify the source to run in the Netgear platform. Now it sounds good that the third party vendors also trying to make their code compatible to Netgear.:)

Great that you could compile

Great that you could compile the code.

you could try to use the boot_wait=on nvram settings in the WGR614L to boot from a tftp server. In this case you should use the embedded ramdisk option in the kernel to make sure you do not have to burn the rootfs into the mtd.

The failure to mount rootfs is the problem I have also got. Let me know if you make further progress on this.

It looks like your link to the svn download is broken. You can either re-edit your post or post it again. I would love to check out the source.

Ok, to download SVN in Windows you have to install TortoiseSVN or an equivalent.

I just flashed my wgr614v8 to

I just flashed my wgr614v8 to the latest DD-WRT v24-sp1 which I downloaded from this site. The flash went fine and configured WDS with my airport express as the repeater, but two things I'm concerned about. One, the power LED does not stay on any longer, only goes on when I reset the router by pressing in the reset button on the back of the unit or resetting via dd-wrt menu. Two, the "check" and "internet" LEDs are constantly lit and in amber color instead of green. Is this a known bug with the latest DD-WRT for the WGR614v8 or did I screw up my router, though DD-WRT is working great! Man, what a differnce it made. Increased the range by two bars. I was in the good range, three bars, and now I'm in Excellent range, 5 bars.

There is a newer version of DD-WRT available for the WGR614L that was just uploaded a few days ago, you may have better luck with it.

You can download the newest version, uploaded on 12/16/2008 (v11205) by clicking here.

It's available in BIN and CHK formats.

Make sure to check the downloads area on the site and the homepage for the newest versions of DD-WRT for your router.  If you have any more questions, please post them to our forums for the router experts to answer :)

Yes, you need to connect with any one of 4 LAN ports .... WAN or Internet port is not needed for firmware upgrade....

Did you try firmware upgrade ..... After firmware upgrade you should wait for a minute or may be a couple of minutes ..to allow your sytem to boot properly with new firmware ....

I think you are doing some mistake in firmware upgrade .... bcoz this firmware works OK on WGR614L ...

It's a mini build SVN

It's a mini build SVN revision 11636 for the netgear WGR614L.
Thanks for your help Achilles, but i thinks it's because of the wds link.

po said: but if i can't access it then what am i to do? or is it done for sure?

Po you will need a TFTP Utility.  I just successfully un-bricked my Linksys router this way.  I had similiar symptoms with just the power led flashing and no configuration screen would come up from a browser.

I searched for a TFTP utility for you but the only thing I was able to find for you was posted by a Mountaineer1 on DSL Reports.

And he states:

"I've used this TFTP software to flash Dlink,Belkin and Linksys routers »ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/tftp.exe with no problems. I have a Belkin F5D7231-4 router I bricked, and got it to accept a reflash by setting a Static IP address on my NIC,starting the TFTP program(20 attempts)while pressing the reset button on the router for 30 seconds, then allowing the program to reflash the .bin file."

So as long as you have the file to flash with give this a try and keep us posted.

Was setting up the WGR614v8

Was setting up the WGR614v8 as a client bridge easy to do? And by client bridge you do mean WDS right? I recently purchased two WGR614v8 with the intention of setting up a similar configuration as yours, but can't get either one to detect each other. Is it perhaps the firmware? I first tried installing the recommended build from DD-WRT's website, then tried two of Eko's builds (11205 &11650), but neither can detect each other. Do you think I specifically need Eko's 11100 build? (I'm having a difficult time finding build 11100).

I currently have a Linksys WRT54GS that I thought wasn't capable of WDS (set it up way back in 2006) but found out such an option exists. The WRT54GS detects the WGR614. It's the WGR614 that is having a difficult time detecting the main Access Point.

Suggestions/insight would be greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Just wanted to update and say

Just wanted to update and say thanks for the resource links. I"m a moderate to advanced computer user, but when it comes to networking I"m a newbie. After looking over DD-WRT's tutorial and watching the YouTube video a couple times I got it to work within an hour. I now have a Linksys WRT54GS client router with DD-WRT v23sp1 wirelessly bridged to a Netgear WGR614v8 with EKO's DD-WRT v24sp2 12548 build firmware also accepting wireless clients with WPA encryption. I also now have a strong enough signal in the area of my house where it used to be spotty. Thanks again everyone!
