WRG614v9 Info

Hullo,

I'm quite new to all this so please forgive my noob'ish'ness.

I have a WRG614v9 supplied (2 actually) from VirginMedia and would like to be able to play around with another firmware(s). On doing some reading I see that the v9 is limited by the amount of memory (2mb) compared to the v8 and L versions? Is there any change of getting something usefull onto this?

Before I start to fiddle around I was wondering if there was a download available of my existing firmware ("V1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK" VGUK = VirginUK I guess) or any way of backing up my existing one should I "brick" it during testing?

And finally, how do I enable Telnet access. I found this topic on the NetGear site http://forum1.netgear.com/showpost.php?p=146285&postcount=1 "Guide: How to update your Virgin WGR614v9 firmware to generic Netgear firmware". But the links for the "TelnetEnable.exe" tool are out of date and I can't find anything else similar that addresses the same problem.

Many thanks for any pointers you may have.

B

DD-WRT has been 'in progress'

DD-WRT has been 'in progress' for the v9 for quite a long time. As far as I know there has been no breakthrough in getting any alternate firmware installed.

Most of these third party

Most of these third party firmwares require 4MB flash so u can't run these on your v9 ....
However DD-WRT site says that its microbuild can b run on WGR614v9 ...but I have not get any third party f/w build that can be run on WGR614v9 bcoz all of them require a flash grtr than 2MB :( ...

For existing firmware, I think the virgin media support sites are your best candidates to find any old or new virgin specific firmware images.

For a raw backup method without hardware modding, see http://www.myopenrouter.com/forum/thread/11603/How-to-edit-the-Firmware-... The commands and backup method assume netgear firmware so the procedure may or may not apply to virgin specific firmware.

The telnetenable code and utilities, for Windows, Linux, and Solaris, are available here, in this site's download section.
