Comparison list WNR3500L DD-WRT & Netgear firmware ?

hi there.

I have questions about the DD-WRT firmware for the Netgear WNR3500L router.

I read dd-wrt.v24-13297_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk should be OK to use, but i can't find anything about what this firmware has in addition to (or less than) Neatgears firmware.

The current Netgear firmware is OK for me, i use USB device and mostly all other features in the firmware. But i am missing one very important thing, namely PORT-MAPPING.

I have 2 webservers and 1 Webmailserver in my home network which should be accessible form the internet. It is not possible to change the default port 80 on any of these servers, so i need Port-mapping possibility on my router.

There seem to be different versions DD-WRT (Big, Mini, etc). I need the version which is 100% the same with the netgear firmware (WNR3500L-V1.0.0.88_13.0.76.chk). I don't want to loose any of the possibilities in this current Netgear firmware, I just need to add Port-Mapping.

Can anyone tell me which DD_WRT version i need (Big, Mini, other) and where to find a comparison list between original Netgear firmware and DD-WRT firmware (with comparison in detail). Or maybe there is (another) way to just add port-mapping to the current Netgear firmware ?

Thanks, Henkie G

Are you sure you just can use

Are you sure you just can use port forwarding and a static LAN IP for your servers?

Go to the download section on this site and you will find the files needed to install the DD-WRT firmware if you would like. You install the mini and then upgrade to standard (which has everything). The drawback to DD-WRT, as I see it, is it's lack of NAS support (your USB HD). I'm pretty sure it only supports Linux formats. There are other firmwares that support access to NTFS and FAT drives (Paragon and Leaf... see the Partners section on this site). The other drawback is going back to the Netgear firmware. Renedis is supposed to be posting a walk through of this sometime soon (but it might not be easy).

There are some screen shots of DD-WRT that are posted on this site. But I can assure you... if it's possible, DD-WRT has it.... and more. Again, the only draw back I see is the difficult in accessing a NAS (non-Linux)

Hi there

Hi there
In answer to the question being sure that portmapping works, Yes.
To access the 2nd webserver i use a different port (like 185) and map port 85 to port 80 on the IP-address of the second webserver. On the internet the address to access the 2nd server = http://2ndserver:185
This worked perfectly with my old (wired) Trust router. Because i need wifi now i selected the netgear which to my supprise doesn't offer portmapping.

I will try the mini and upgrading it to standard for testing. The USB-HD is currently FAT32, but i don't mind if this has to become Linux format. I can format it to linux using my old NAS.

Maybe i will have a look at other firmware as suggested by Brandon.

Thx sofar.

Hi There

Hi There
Thanks for your answers.
DD-WRT works great, portforwarding just as i needed.
But I have to figure out how to activate the USB-HD properly because when i activated USB2.0 support together with USB-storage support and FAT32 the router rebooted and got stuck into a restart loop, it kept restarting over and over and i couldnt get into the management console. A reset of the router (switch) finally solved this problem but i hadn't saved my config yet so i could start all over again.
btw USB FAT32 is supported in the version i have downloaded (WNR3500L dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin).
When the USb support works Ok i will post a follow up.
Thanks again, Henkie G

Let me know if you get access to the HD as I've not been able to do this. I was thinking about switching to Tomato as this access ability seems to be built into the firmware. But if it's possible under DD-WRT, I rather just keep it. As far as I could tell, tons of additional items needed to be installed to get HD access working.
