DD-WRT Firmware Now Available for NETGEAR WGR614L

The moment you've all been waiting for is here. You can now unleash the power of the DD-WRT custom router firmware on your NETGEAR WGR614L Open Source Router!

Some of the highlights of v24 of the DD-WRT firmware include:

  • Virtual SSID's
  • Bridging + VLAN Support
  • Network configuration enhancements
  • New languages added
  • PPPOE Server

There are many other features and enhancements to DD-WRT that you can read about at their official site.

Now, you'll need to head on over to our Projects section, where you can download the latest build of DD-WRT for your NETGEAR WGR614L.  You can also head directly to the DD-WRT download page here.

Feel free to post a question in our DD-WRT forum, and tap into our community of experts by either sharing a solution, or asking for answers! We'd love to hear about your experiences of upgrading your router.

I am looking for the ability

I am looking for the ability to "throttle up" the transmitter a bit to get better apartment complex coverage than I do with the stock firmware. I also noticed that the security options are magnificent! I currently run WPA2 with AES on the stock firmware, but the security options appear more prevalent and probably not as hard to access as the stock firmware. There are a couple of questions I must ask though. 1. How does ths firmware install in the router? Do you download it to a wired computer into the router, (my desktop in input 4), and then use the Firmware Upgrade in the stock firmware to upload it to the router? 2. Is the program capable of downloading to a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 machine without OS incompatibility problems? 3. How often during the process does the router end up bricking requiring a special serial cable to unlock it? That would be an unprecedented disaster for me if that happened! I would lose total outside access with my laptop because it is connected completely wireless. It would take me quite some time to straighten that out even if  am CompTIA A+ certified! I might even lose access to the Internet on the desktop if it bricked! 4. I've seen an issue with the front panel lights blinking weirdly and the like. I understand there is a fix. Which version has the fix for that? Please get back to me on this as I am seriously interested in running this firmware in the router but I have to make sure everything will go smoothly as my Netgear WGR614v8 wireless router is the heart of my system and not only controls my Internet access for both machines on my system but access to my shared files on the desktop as well.

To answer your first question, yes download it to a wired machine, flashing wireless is ill advised, and yes so long as you use the proper .chk (not the .bin till you have dd-wrt on the router)  file if your upgrading from netgear firmware webgui, remember this is very important! To answer Q 2, yes you can download it to a Winxp sp3 machine fine, you are only downloading the image which will be flashed to your router, the pc in which you download it to will basically be a storage vessel and does not tie into your operating system. Q 3, so long as you do the flash right you will not have to worry about bricking. Alot of why you hear about people bricking is because they simply do not give enough time after the flash, takes about 5 mins to set in once flashed. Should you need the link for the proper .chk lemme know, i will post it on here for you.  and whoa i just looked at the dates on this thread with no reply, mamma mia! cheers
