Trying it now. Beta 14

Trying it now. Beta 14 bricked my WNR3500L so had to debrick and start over with Beta 16.

Will post some results after a bit of testing.

Just curious why 2 separate

Just curious why 2 separate firmwares are provided with and without USB support? What would happen if you used the "with USB" version on a router without a USB drive attached?

Thanks!

The USB version is much

The USB version is much larger in terms of size - if you don't plan on using it, it's much better to install the leaner version. I'm not sure that installing the USB version on a router without USB support would brick it, but I have never tested that...

The WNR3500 V2 without the

The WNR3500 V2 without the USB cannot install the larger WNR3500L USB firmware.
Not enough memory.

So, 3500 V2 use the Non USB firmware. 3500L use the USB one if needed if not the smaller NON USB firmware will work.

BTW, 24hours and no problem with Beta 16 except that the TiVo stuff isn't working properly for me.
May need a few tweaks in my setup. But the router functions and other USB functions seem fine.

I have had some problems with the new beta.

Although the USB devices are listed in the router web gui, cannot access the drives in windows explorer. When double clicking on the router icon in Explorer, only the printer is shown and not the share.

Also, 40 wide channel is not available when N only is selected. You have to select "Auto." This occurs on all channels. I use WPA2-PSK/AES, CTS disabled, WMM enabled.

Signal seems weaker and thus computers placed at some distance are SLOWER than 9045.

Reverting to 9045 fixed all of the above issues.

I am not experiencing the wireless problems.

Maybe my settings are incorrect.  Can you share your wireless settings?  Do you see the same problem I am seeing when N-only/wide channel 40 is selected (check the status page and tell me what is the channel width - is it 20 or 40?)

Yeah, I get 40 too at "Auto." N-only is the problem. What about USB? Are your shares appearing in Explorer?

Even 9045 was not working

Even 9045 was not working properly for me. With 9045 I can use 40 wide channel with "N-only" setting, but my client bridge just couldn't synchronize the channel I chosen for the main router WNR3500L with 9045. I set channel 01 on WNR3500L, in the first few days my WNDR3300 picked up at channel 03 and the connection was very unstable. After a few days the WNDR3300 just couldn't pick up the channel and kept scanning. If I used "N-only" with typical 20 channel everything worked fine and the connection was very stable and even faster than those with wide 40 channel.

taekwon3dan, what firmware do you use on your WNDR3300? I tried a few and looked the factory original firmare gave be the best results when used as WDS client.

DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/31/10) std-nokaid-nohot-nostore - build 13972M

THIS WORKS GREAT!

Available here: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn13972/

I follow the instructions in dd-wrt wiki for client bridge with the additional step of setting wl1 as an AP for G clients:

FYI - I tried the more recent dd-wrt firmwares but they are not as good as the 13972, at least as a CB with tomato as a primary router.

I reflashed 9047,

I reflashed 9047, reconfigured, and USB is OK now.

taekwon3dan, thank you for

taekwon3dan, thank you for your information. My previous setup was exactly same as yours except I put dd-wrt 14289 on my WNDR3300 as a client bridge. I studied for a few hours on dd-wrt website before I decided to put 14289 on WNDR3300. This setup worked fine for the first few days. It was rock stable with typical 20Mhz channel, but very unstable with wide 40mhz channel. I could even stream 720p movies. One day all of sudden it just stopped working. Then I played around and tried a few firmwares from different sources.

Next step I will try your setup: put tomato 9047 on WNR3500L and dd-wrt 13972 on WNDR3300. By this setup do you get stable client bridge connection with wide 40mhz channel? Are both units locked at the same channel? One feature I like is the built-in webserver with Netgear default firmware. Does tomato 9047 have such feature?

Yes.  Very stable at 40 MHz.  No drops whatsoever.  I can pull 28 Mbps (out of 35 Mbps connection) on wl0 at channel 1 thru my PS3.  I have wl1 on G at channel 1 too.

As I said, I experienced that dd-wrt 14000+ were problematic insofar as wndr3300 Cb set up was concerned with tomato as primary router.

I'm not sure what Netgear webserver is.  Do you mean FTP server? If so, yes.  In the new tomato, there is an option for USB "media server," but I don't know what that is because I don't use it.

I was on my Xbox when I was suddenly disconnected from LIVE and couldn't reconnect (wireless). I tried going to 192.168.1.1 and all it said was:

Tomato (beta)

My wireless laptop then lost the connection and I had to restart the router. This is the 3500L.

taekwon3dan, Thank you for

taekwon3dan, Thank you for your reply. 28 Mbps, that's terrific! I only got that speed on CB occasionally with factory firmware using WDS. The factory firmware for WNR3500 has both ftp and web servers built in. With web server you can share your files by http method. But its functions are very limited.

When you said "DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/31/10) std-nokaid-nohot-nostore - build 13972M", do you mean "dd-wrt.v24-13972_NEWD_std-nokaid_nohotspot_nostor" or "dd-wrt.v24-13972_VINT_std-nokaid_nohotspot_nostor"?

In my previous setup, channel 01 was used on WNR3500L, channel 13 was used on wl01g AP of WNDR3300 to avoid interference. wl00N was supposed to synchronize to channel 01 automatically. Somehow it only synchronized to channel 01 with 20MHz band width. With 40MHz band width wl0N used channel 03, that's 10Mhz difference from channel 01 on the base station WNR3500. So the CB was very weak and unstable with 40MHz.

I hope my new setup will solve the problem.

NEWD!  NOT VINT - it may brick your router.  Also, don't use NEWD-2 - you may brick it or you may only get one radio to work!

When I switch the Netgear wndr3300 wl1-g to a channel other than the N-channel on tomato, I found that G slows down.  I don't know why.  It's counterintuitive.  Therefore, I found that you must keep the wl1-g channel the same as the channel that tomato broadcasts for N.

taekwon3dan, so the one you

taekwon3dan, so the one you are using is "dd-wrt.v24-13972_NEWD_std-nokaid_nohotspot_nostor"? There's no such "NEWD-2" in the fold you gave me anyway, right?

Also, after installing tomato 9047 I have the same problem you had: status shows channel width 20MHz when "N only" selected. Have you by any chance found solutions?

That's right.  Flash NEWD.  That page does not have NEWD-2.  Also, make sure you do a 30-30-30 reset before and after.  You should wait 5 minutes after flashing, then do a 30 sec power reset (power off for 30 sec), and then after all the LED lights come back, do the 30-30-30.

IF IT IS THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE FLASHING DD-WRT, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN WIKI FOR WNDR-3300.  Here: www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3300

You can get the 40 MHz channel wdith by selecting "Auto" instead of N-only.

taekwon3dan, thank you for your reply. your instruction on printer server setup with WNR3500L is great. By following it I easily got my Canon MF4350d worked from all my networked pcs. Do you by any chance know how to get the scan function on MF4350d to work? Thank you.

I can not save a file to a NAS drive directly from within the program. Every time I worked on a file from NAS drives I can not save it back. I have to go around: save it temporarily on my pc and move it back. I experienced this issue on all firmwares that I tried. Anyone has solutions?

How to quote a comment when replying to it?

taekwon3dan, thank you for all your valuable information.

Seems to me that both 9045 and 9046 had better signal strength then this one does. At least the code doing the reporting says they do.

Dear taeknwon3dan,

Dear taeknwon3dan,

I struggled for over a week now but still can't get it to work. Basically I followed your setup. I reverted back to tomato 9045 on WNR3500, and put dd-wrt 13972M on WNDR3300. I set up WNDR3300 as a client bridge. Wireless security is "WPA Personal/AES". They worked perfectly fine when I put them in the same room upstairs. As soon as I moved the bridge to my media center downstaires, the bridge was broken. They are not very far away (about 40ft or 12m) and worked before although connection was not good and unstable. What have I missed? I desperately need help. Thank you so much!

goodwill,

goodwill,

sorry to hear about your troubles. Did you try increasing the signal strength on the wnr3500l and the wndr3300? How about selecting an uncrowded channel? I have mine set to 28 mW on BOTH routers on channel 1 (40Mhz) and the wndr3300 is about 20 ft away in the family room. Signal quality is 60%. SOLID.

This is what I have set on the wnr3500L:
Wireless Mode Access Point
Wireless Network Mode N Only
Radio Enabled
SSID
Security WPA2 Personal (PSK) + AES
Channel 1 - 2.412 GHz
Channel Width 40 MHz
Rate 300

The security must be matched in the wndr3300. Also, did you follow th edd-wrt wiki instructions for client bridging?

This is what is shown on dd-wrt gui status:

Wireless

Anyone have any ideas why all

Anyone have any ideas why all of the sudden when I click "Advanced" the page will never load for me? All the other links in tomatoes web interface work fine.

It was working fine then all of the sudden it no longer works, this was using beta 10. I upgraded it to beta 16 but it is still having problems. I have also tried:

- rebooting
- restore default
- erase nvram

Nothing seems to work. Thanks for your help!

I was able to clear out my cookies and am now able to access the Advanced settings except for the Advanced Wireless settings. It is still hanging whenever I try to access them.

If I ssh in to the box is there a way for me to check the NVRAM settings and make any changes if something is causing the page to not load properly?

Update:

Something was messed with my browser cache. I tried accessing the page from another computer and it works fine... Really weird that FFX would just flip out and make one page stop working for no reason...

taekwon3dan,

taekwon3dan,

Thank you so much for the detailed information. I almost copied your configuration. I think now the problem is the signal strength. Within 20ft they worked perfectly fine. I just do not understand why the signal is so weak in bridge mood but very strong if connected by wireless adapter. I can connect to WNR3500L from my notebook over 60ft away. Anyway, I really appreciate your kind help.

Thank you so much!

You should be able to switch

You should be able to switch by just renaming the trx file extension to bin. I have had a few problems with the Beta 16 version so you may want to wait for a Beta 17 or higher. :)
