Update: DD-WRT Kong Mod - USB/FTP/SAMBA3/MINIDLNA

Finally after a few days of testing my build is definitely ready for the public.

It now includes minidlna. Besides that I fixed a few minor issues with my previous build.

New:

  • minidlna + simple webif settings
  • update uclibc
  • network performance fix

Fixed:

  • ext3 permissions using samba
  • large file support for samba and busybox console utils

Download

@Peter: Please upload the new build.

Ok, this build now definitely passes QA:-)

YOu'll find a new section(DLNA Server) under Services-NAS.

Just enable minidlna and fillout the paths to your media dirs e.g. /jffs/video

Is it possible to upgrade my

Is it possible to upgrade my WNR3500L under DD-WRT (mega) with this build through the web interface ? Any prerequisites ?

Kong

Yes you can just upgrade it

Yes you can just upgrade it via webinterface. You may have to do a reset if your nvram is already filled up with data, but in most cases you can just use upgrade and leave the option "Don't reset"

Does this build also address the FAT32 access problem? I've downloaded and installed the above bin to my router, but I am NOT able to create any files/folders on the attached external USB. I enabled USB and Samba (in addition to enabling the public option under Samba).

My setup is simple:
USB drive is FAT32, do I need to create a /public folder on the external drive?

Thanks for your help!

Yes this build now mounts

Yes this build now mounts with the correct umask and I have tested it. Can you check two things?

Run in a console on the router (Telnet or SSH):

mount

this should read umask=000

Can you read from the drive?

Don V.

I SSHed into the router and

I SSHed into the router and issues the mount command. It did indeed show the umask for my vfat drive as 000. I can also write data using shell access to the /mnt folder (which displays the contents of my FAT32USB drive correctly.

BUT...I still have no drive access when I try and use Samba. Maybe I'm missing something.
Here is what I have set:
USB Tab
--all items enabled except for USB Printer Support.
--Disk Mount Point is: /mnt
I can see all my disk information for my attached FAT32 drive.

NAS Tab
Only enabling File Sharing
Samba: enable
Server String : (no value set)
Workgroup: MSHOME (matches all my Windows machines workgroup name)
Public Share: Enable
Readonly: Disable
Use Custom Configuration: Disable

I can see the //dd-wrt/public folder when I try and map a drive to it, but I cannot see any of the files on my USB drive. I also cannot create any files or folders.

Thanks for your help.

Public share by default uses

Public share by default uses disk mount point /jffs, that's the problem.
Change the mountpoint to jffs and reboot, now it should work.

In the download section I described how to setup samba, I should also add this info in the webinterface.

Cheers, Kong

Thanks for your reply. I'll give it a shot. So, what happens if I left the public option Disabled? How can I gain access to the /mnt?

Thanks for all your help!

Thanks for all your help! One last question, how does using your dd-wrt mod stack up against using Tomato--in reference to attached USB read/write speeds for FAT32?

Kong

Since Tomato rolled back to a

Since Tomato rolled back to a previous broadcom driver the read/write speeds are pretty much the same.

Kong,

Kong,
You stated the following...
"In the download section I described how to setup samba..."

Where exactly is this information located in the download section? Do you have a direct link to this information?

Thanks again for all your help!

I have yet another question.

I have yet another question. I am using your mod (downloaded from above). What is the proper way to attach/unattach my external USB drives to the router?

Can I just plug/unplug them? I want to swap out our external USB backup drives every other day and I'd prefer to keep the drives FAT32 and NTFS partitions from becoming corrupted.

Thanks once again for all your help.

@Don this entirely depends on

@Don this entirely depends on what filesystem you use and if you use JFFS2, which only makes sense with flash drives. In general the best way would be to logon via ssh, telnet stop any services that access the drive, call umount remove the drive and then attach the new drive. That's the 100% working solution, without a reboot.

Another fine solution is to poweroff the router, remove the drive and power on the router.

Just removing the drive and adding it is basically working but depending on the filesystem you will see a fsck next time you try to connect it to another machine. You should not loose any data though unless the drive was just accessed at the time you removed it.

Thank you for this build. My problem is the wireless range, not sure if it is my router or the firmware. at 2 feet I only get 55% signal quality at 40 feet 22% then at 80 feet it drops to 2%. Any insight would be helpful.

Thank you Don

Many Thanks for that build. Would be great if you can tell me how i could get my lighttpd running.  I always get the following error "Bus error"

I doubt it's the firmware. At my place I set the TX Power to 2mW and I still have a good signal through a concrete ceiling on another floor. Can you provide a screenshot of your advanced wireless settings? This router has the best signal of all routers I had so far.

Do you have a second client to test the wireless signal?
Also make sure the router is not placed next to a cordless phone, radiator or other large metallic things
