Changing from tomato to toastman

Hi all,

I'm relatively new and inexperienced when it comes to this stuff, but I'm open to learning, and am hoping someone can provide some guidance before I do anything stupid!

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL (ver 1.1) router, and currently have Tomato version 1.13 installed. It works great, but I'd like to be able to monitor individual client's bandwidth usage on our network here, primarily to figure out who's clogging the upload. I have just come across Toastman's tomatoUSB mod which has a client monitor, and would love to try it out.

But before I do, I need to clarify which version to install.

I've gone to this page:  http://tomatousb.org/doc:build-types to read about the different versions, but I'm unclear on what to do. I'm not using my USB port to connect to the router... the cable modem is connected to the router via a crossover cable, and the clients are all wirelessly connected to the router through their network cards. Does this mean I should ONLY use the NO USB types, or am I misunderstanding something here?

The second question I have concerns switching from tomato regular to tomatoUSB. Is it safe to just use the administration interface on my current tomato build, by clicking on Upgrade, and then selecting the trx file? Is it that simple?

Thanks in advance for any guidance here!

Crikey, 1.13 is very old

Crikey, 1.13 is very old indeed!

You have a Linksys WRT54GL which does not have a USB port. It is a MIPSR1 router. You should load 1.28.7626.1 BETA. Use the std build. 7628.1 is also good, but has a more complex interface for setting up VLAN's, which you probably don't need. It is a little more up to date. From time to time new builds will be posted with improvements. It's up to you which one to try. You may get help on linksysinfo.org if you have any problems.

You may upgrade using the admin page on Tomato. When you do so, check the box to erase NVRAM after flashing. Then reconfigure your router again, don't load an old config file.

Thanks for the reply Toastman

Thanks for the reply Toastman :)

I seem to have gone through every link on this page:

http://tomatousb.org/download

but I can't find where to get the 1.28.7626.1 BETA build. I only see this link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/tomatousb/files/Experimental%20%28beta%2...

Look below this text, you'll see the site I use to host files is 4shared :-)

This is primarily a NETGEAR site and the builds on here are not suitable for a GL. You should look on linksysinfo.org for info and help with your GL.

thanks! Have installed the

thanks! Have installed the version you recommended (1.28.7626.1, though not the BETA version as that was only for the 1.28.7626 version). Client monitor is exciting!

Have also checked out the linksys forums - lovely to know that there's a thriving community :) I'll restrict my postings to there from now on - I also see you're an ever helpful presence there.

and wow, my speeds seem to be even faster now!
