New build - Toastman-RT-1.28.7491 and variants

From previous builds:

  • Dropbear 0.54 update
  •  OpenVPN enhancements & username/password only authentication
  •  PPTP VPN client integration and GUI

Latest:

  • Dnsmasq 2.59 update
  • VLAN-GUI: include WHR-G54S port mapping (Teaman)
  • Fix column sorting on ipt-daily.asp, ipt-monthly.asp and ipt-details.asp (Teaman)
  • Added "Route Modem IP" option (from Tomato/MLPPP) (Teaman)
  • Revert "l2tp: backport Asus' l2tp driver"
  • L2TP defaults to sync framing
  •

The latter two commits fixes connection problems experienced by many L2TP users esp. in Russia, while it should not affect other users. It has never been clear to me if the L2TP connections ever worked properly

And finally - the most important change:

  • Reverted Wireless Driver to 5.10.147.0 in all RT builds

The decision to revert the driver was taken after exhaustive tests and reports from many people, the conclusion I came to is that this driver gives better performance and less hassle than 5.10.142.0.

Toastman said: | Flash with new firmware from the Tomato GUI, erase NVRAM after flashing (this is quite important). Set up from scratch, do not restore your old config as that would be the same as never having erased NVRAM. You can use this method to make it easier if you need to: http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showpost.php?p=362345&postcount=221 I like displaying cache and buffers as free memory. Pick an RT build from the website, probably the USB EXT version. Latest version just posted is 7491. See next post!

Now i have enough knowledge to feel comfort in upgrading.
Will upgrade to your latest rev.
Thank you Toastman!

Yes, it is normal in many

Yes, it is normal in many router firmwares to disallow port forwarding by UPnP of ports in the common range 1-1024. I'll take a look at it, because I think that is the problem.

There is a workaround script on these forums somewhere, either here or on Linksysinfo...

Ok, this is driving me nuts.

Ok, this is driving me nuts. I have 0 remote access to the router. From Lan it works fine, but I can't log in externally. SSH doesn't work, http doesn't work...and this just started. However, if I flash back to a normal version of tomatoUSB...it lets me log in just fine.

I tried searching but doesn't seem like anyone else is having this issue...anyone have an idea?

Flashed Toastman Tomato a couple of days ago on my E4200, works perfect so far! Many thanks for your work Mr. Toastman! Could use some description of some of the configuration options (which I assume I'll get after bugging people around on various fora), but otherwise things are great!

Okay, so here are some

Okay, so here are some questions to which I have not been able to find an answer on the web so far:

1. Does Toastman Tomato have Java installed?
2. If the answer to #2 is "no," is there a Java pack that you'd recommend? Or is it that Java is not something that E4200 could handle given its meager resources?
3. On the "Admin Access" page, what is the "Common Name (CN)" field?
4. How can I change the login username? So far I can only log in with "admin."

Thank you!

About the Jan. 10 release: I

About the Jan. 10 release: I see that the 1.28.0494 version under the "Basic RT-N MIPSR2 Kernel 2.6 (E4200 and a few others)" folder has no "RT-N" files. Is that a simple typing mistake (you left out the "N" by mistake), or is this supposed to have deeper meaning?

The deeper meaning is officially known as a "cockup" :-)

I take it then that the Jan 16/17 release (1.28.0494.2) is primarily meant to fix the missing "N" blunder, is that so?

Otherwise, if you don't mind my asking, what is the procedure for updating/flashing subsequent Toastman Tomato releases? More specifically:

(a) should we do a factory reset before flashing a new release atop a previous one, or is it that no such factory reset is required?

(b) Will flashing without doing a factory reset keep all the settings?

(I apologize if you've answered such questions elsewhere, but I have not been able to find an answer despite searching around for a while.)

Hello Toastman, I have ASUS

Hello Toastman, I have ASUS RT-16n router with your amazing firmware!

I have one question:

I need GUEST SSID - does any version of your firmware support it (in GUI)? If not, please when you add this feature? I am a begginer so I need config this feature fast and simple :)

And one idea:

Could you please make your own website or something, where you will send changelogs and news? I know you have a repository with version changelogs but the website would be better for many users. Something fast and simple where the new user can find everything about your firmware... Maybe if you dont want website, try twitter. It could enought...

Thank you very much for your work and your time!

There is not GUI for Multi

There is not GUI for Multi-SSID _yet_. There has been hints and allegations that one may be forthcoming, but we shall have to wait and see.

There are many of us who want it, but it takes time to code it properly so that it works with all the hardware that Tomato can run on.

Toastman just got done intergrating a new ingress QOS system that is still a work in progress.

Teaman has all the VLAN configurations projects going. The ability to properly split a SSID onto a different VLAN is essential for security reasons.

All I can advise is to be patient. I think one will come out eventually, but it ain't easy to dive into someone elses code and just add major features.

I am using a Netgear 3500 v2

I am using a Netgear 3500 v2 router with standard 1.28.7494_4 since I was experiencing some guy issues I will describe below, but I find myself with the same problem in this version.

Once I login to the GUI then after a few clicks (sometimes a single click to a link to check admin setting for example) causes it lock it and not allow me to do anything else. I am unable to navigate through any tabs or links on that gui. Not sure if anyone is experiencing the same issue, but it comes back after a few minutes and locks me out again and again. This is using Safari browser.

Don't ever use backup file from a different build. Alwas reconfigure by hand. BUT this method would work: link

Thanks. I have, so far, two questions after reading the post at this link:

  1. Once I have the config.txt, and once I've flashed the router with a new build, how do I restore the settings contained in the config.txt file? Do I use "nvram commit" or "nvram import config.txt"? It is not clear to me what command I should be using;
  2. I take it that restoring all the settings from the config.txt file should work fine for the same router, so the file can be imported/restored in its totality without cherry-picking the useful lines, right? Or is it that even for the same router one should only restore the essential lines?

Aqualung - You seem to have

Aqualung - You seem to have totally missed the point. We erase nvram to clear conflicting or unused nvram variables from the new installation. Restoring the whole config - either by the config backup or by installing the exported settings IN THEIR ENTIRETY would result in the routers configuration being exactly as it was before you erased it.

You must cherry pick the settings that you need, common sense should be enougfh to decide which ones - usually things like static DHCP etc that would otherwise be a lot of work.

As for how to apply the settings, did you read the link? It is well explained.

Thank you. I have configured my router the way I need it. Now I need to flash a newer Toastman-Tomato firmware on it. After flashing the newer firmware (which, I take it, has "clearing the NVRAM" as prerequisite), I need all of my old settings ported over to the new environment. Is restoring the config.txt file in its entirety the answer? (The question is, then, will that old config.txt file contain stuff that may conflict with the new firmware--and hence could wreck my router?)

As for the explanation you posted in the linksysinfo.org forums, I have to confess that I find it confusing, as you may be assuming some things that someone w/o your knowledge of Linux may not know. (Interestingly, I see that that posting looks a little different this morning from what it was yesterday, although I don't see any signs of having been edited in the meantime.) Say I execute the commands I selected from the config.txt file, one by one, in the new router's command execution box. One way I understand I can do that is this: after executing one command I type "NVRAM commit" in the same command execution box, hence do this for each line I want committed? Or do I first execute all the relevant lines from the config.txt file, and then type "NVRAM commit" just once?

Thanks for your work, and for taking the time to educate newbies like me.

I would strongly recommend

I would strongly recommend doing only one nvram commit (total). Doing one commit per line may put some high wear on your nvram (it can only be written approximately 10,000 times before it will fail). If the nvram fails, your device is basically worthless.

I am using v1.28.7494 MIPSR2

I am using v1.28.7494 MIPSR2-Toastman-VLAN-RT K26 USB VPN on a 3500l. Sometimes I will lose my ip address for less than a minute then it will come back. It is a wireless connection. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue?

Update: Never mind this post. I am going to try a 30 30 30 reset and reload the router

Did you notice this? WARNING - DHCP IS DISABLED BY DEFAULT. DON'T FORGET TO TURN IT ON IF YOU NEED IT. You will need to set up a static IP address on your computer to access the router and  then change that setting if needed.

OK. I screwed up somewhere. I noticed the warning that DHCP in disabled by default. I wanted to flash a new version and start fresh except for some system settings that I saved in a txt file from the linksys link. I clicked on nvram erase and updated the firmware.

Firmware flashing finished, I set a static IP on my computer and I cannot login into the router at all. Am I doing this wrong? I've been trying for two hours.

Win 7 Ultimate>Local Area Connection>TCP/IPv4>properties and set my static IP. But maybe I'm setting the wrong static IP or something, but I can't get back in. I'm downstairs with my laptop plugged directly into the modem so I can send this off, but I'm hoping that maybe I'm just not setting the right static or that I'm clicking something wrong.

Do I need to set up a static Ip and then reboot my machine?

Any help would be appreciated. Even pictures! Thanks in advance and hopefully I can solve this by the morning or the better half will not be happy with my experimenting.

When you flash and erase

When you flash and erase NVRAM the router should revert to 192.168.1.1 with no DHCP enabled. Set your ipv4 properties to, say, 192.168.1.100 - dns and gateway both to 192.168.1.1 and save. Now login as root and admin for password and turn on dhcp if you need it. If you get this far you're OK.

At least, that's what *should* happen.

*quick update. I'm still experiencing issues, but seem to be able to connect computers wirelessly. The strange thing is, I can't connect computers using their wired interfaces. I have several machines that use wired connections and they don't seem to work.

For some reason when I unplugged the modem for the router I was able to get back into the router. I then set up wireless and enabled DHCP. Wireless-seems to work, wired is a no go. So, I'm still confused. Unfortunately, work gets in the way of continuing to work on my issues. I've changed my wired connection back to obtain an ip automatically since I've enabled DHCP, but that doesn't seem to have helped either.

--Original message before update
You are a lifesaver, but now I've encountered another problem. I think it has everything to do with my saved router config that I executed once in to the router. Now I'm locked out again. I thought in my saved config that I had dhcp enabled, must not have, but the saved config should revert my gateway to 192.168.5.5. Of course, now I can't get into the router using 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.5.5. I'll try to post my config file once I'm at work since I'm going to have to leave here. I really messed this up didn't I.

I also tried to reset the router and did a 30-30-30 reset, but still no access.

Thanks in advance.
