I think when I get home I'm

I think when I get home I'm going to reset the nvram and start over again. I wonder if that will be the smoothest way at this point.

When I enable DHCP and set the gateway to 192.168.5.5 will I still need to set a static IP on my machine? Or at that point is it not needed? Basically if I enable DHCP then will I be good to go for the rest of the steps?

I just want to make sure I do this right and even if I have to spend a bit more time recreating settings it won't matter. As long as it works.

Reset NVRAM is a good idea if

Reset NVRAM is a good idea if you get stuck. You should always do this after flashing new firmware.

You should not use your old saved config file when you upgrade firmware, as it will restore any unwanted configuration settings from the previous version. This often causes quite weird and random problems to occur. Restoring it is the same as never having erased nvram in the first place.

You can if you wish keep the static address on your PC or you can set it back to auto to get address given to it by dhcp. Either will work. As long as the gateway and dns is set to the router's IP.

If you are using Windows, you can see what IP your PC is using by START, enter "cmd" into the search box, then when you get the black command window, type "ipconfig /all"

Good luck!

If you elect to use dhcp, then entering a PC into the "static dhcp" list makes sure that PC is always given the same IP address.

Setting the nvram and

Setting the nvram and starting over did the trick. I did have to reboot my cable modem as well, but otherwise things are almost back to normal.

I did not use my old config file or all of it. I had followed this one:

nvram export --set nvram | grep rrule1
nvram export --set nvram | grep qos_
nvram export --set nvram | grep dhcp_
nvram export --set nvram | grep dhcpd_
nvram export --set nvram | grep ddnsx0=
nvram export --set nvram | grep lan_hostname=
nvram export --set nvram | grep lan_ipaddr=
nvram export --set nvram | grep wan_proto=
nvram export --set nvram | grep wan_hostname=
nvram export --set nvram | grep wan_domain
nvram export --set nvram | grep pppoe_username=
nvram export --set nvram | grep pppoe_passwd=
nvram export --set nvram | grep http_
nvram export --set nvram | grep router_name

I must have messed up somewhere though which is highly likely.

I have a few static IP's that I use. I use the Static DHCP/ARP & Bandwidth Monitoring of LAN Clients module to do that.

I am having a slight issue with forwarding a few ports. A few work, but some don't. Not sure why though.

All in all, I'm back to normal, the riot squad has been reigned in and the family is happy. thanks for all the work you do.

Hi Toastman. Thanks for all

Hi Toastman. Thanks for all the great contributions.
I am struggling with this. Openwrt has a way to use macvlan to enable multiple mac addresses on the same interface.
I have not found a way to do the same with Tomato. Is there?
Thanks again

Main changes, Toastman 1.28

Main changes, Toastman 1.28.7494 onwards

  • Incoming QOS class bandwidth pie chart
  • IMQ based QOS ingress system - fix outgoing QOS prios increase HTB prios to 10 change class prio assignment
  • nvram defaults now country=SG, txpwr=0 (auto) just an attempt to find some better defaults, SG has few restrictions, txpower of "0" or "auto" is safe for all routers. Change if you wish.
  • Revert "Static ARP: option to enable all known devices" - some display bugfixes
  • add RTMPT filter (rtmp over http) - thanks to Porter
  • increase HTB prios, missed in previous commit
  • route modem IP for Static IP - add 600Mhz cpu freq - route modem IP - fix missed changes
  • change default QOS rules
  • Static ARP: minor improvement in the code
  • UDPxy: fixed symlink for udpxrec
  • Update to some timezones
  • EXPERIMENTAL Web UI for multiple virtual/guest WLANs (in VLAN builds)
  • Tools/System bugfix: command output was hidden inside the 'Notes' section'
  • fix dhcp options for non-VLAN builds
  • Fixed duplicated ipt_account(); (started twice)
  • 3G modem support (from branch tomato-shibby)
  • fixed typo in services.c
  • - fixed QOS ingress prios

March 9 2012 - 1.28.7496.2 and variants

  • USB detection, old scheme first
  • Fix libusb error (3G modem support)
  • Update miniDNLA to 1.0.24

WARNING - DHCP IS DISABLED BY DEFAULT.

DON'T FORGET TO TURN IT ON IF YOU NEED IT.

TO DO THAT, YOU MUST SET A FIXED IP ON YOUR PC.

To recap:

The new IMQ ingress system for Tomato is now complete and working well.

The maximum bandwidth setting is now a real limit, and no longer just used to calculate class percentage bandwidths.

The incoming QOS section now has both rates and limits, similar to the outgoing section. The classes now have priorities. When set up correctly, lower priority classes will be dropped first, allowing higher classes to use bandwidth instead. Tomato now makes much better use of the available bandwidth. You must experiment with the system now to see how it behaves differently than before.

Set both incoming and outgoing limits to your measured bandwidth less 15%. For best VOIP response, (and maybe games), make that less 33% and then experiment to find a compromise after you've got it working well.

New Release - 1.28.7497 & variants

This release sees the addition of PPTP Server & GUI by Teaman. There's also a web GUI to configure and monitor active connections to the PPTP server.

Support for WNR3500L V2 added 28 March 2102

- Minor multiLAN/wireless bugfixes

- MultiSSID: fixes saving WL VIF settings when net mode is 'n-only' (5GHz radios)

- Syslogd custom path improvements - rc: preserve /var/log/messages if it's a file at syslogd restart if we have a custom path set, check if it's a symlink (and remove/recreate it if necessary)

- PPTP Server for Tomato (Ext, VPN Builds) - by Teaman

this commit possibly introduces some bugs, but here we go!

this version allows up to 6 IPs/users/concurrent connections (ppp4-ppp9)

broadcast relay has been included on the webUI, but hasn't been thoroughly tested

- PPTPD: MPPE and compile bugfixes (batch #1)

Attempt to fix some random decryption errors causing connections to become unusable. Clients had to disconnect/reconnect manually to fix the problem once it started to happen. The issue seems to be related with some parameters/settings being negotiated between clients and the PPTP server. Hopefully, these changes should prevent these problems from happening. See commit 3ef7e67858ecff04caf8197e381fa8b7c68c668e. Also, this commit should fix some build/compilation issues when merging this code into other branches

- PPTPD: move webUI pages into 'VPN Tunneling' menu

WARNING DHCP IS DISABLED BY DEFAULT. DON'T FORGET TO TURN IT ON IF YOU NEED IT.

SET A FIXED IP ON YOUR PC TO ACCESS THE ROUTER.

PLEASE DO NOT FLASH 60K NVRAM VERSIONS ON TO ROUTERS OTHER THAN THOSE WHICH THEY ARE INTENDED FOR. THEY WILL SHOW 60K IN THE DISPLAY BUT YOU WILL USUALLY BRICK THE ROUTER IF YOU TRY TO ACTUALLY USE MORE THAN 32K. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Thanks Toastman for pointing

Thanks Toastman for pointing me to the right thread.

What capabilities are in the router / software that can be used to monitor my LAN traffic.

I'm guessing none, if much of the traffic will stay on the switches - which are of course cheap unmanaged switches...

Just looking for ways to figure out why some of my xboxes are having issues with getting data streams from the media center server...

Hmm. Well, that is one step in the right direction though... so I can shove my kids face in it when he denies that he's abusing our internet connection!

So I guess a managed/smart switch placed right after the ROUTER is my only option for "LAN" traffic?

Oh - and a question -

Can I backup and restore my settings from my existing version?  I sure as hell don't want to have to reconfigure all the options...

Hey Toastman, i updated my router today to 1.28.7497.1 VPN. Everything went fine except for the daylight saving option, my timezone is UTC +01:00 currently with daylight saving which should add one hour. On the 25th of March at 02:00 AM daylight saving became active, but with the correct settings my router is currently one hour behind. I guess that the timezone data is outdated?

bigjohn, You may be able to use the router with old config but it is generally better to erase and reconfigure after flashing. Here's an easy way to do it:

Hi Toastman,

Hi Toastman,
I recently bought 2 asus rt-n12b1 routers, which want to replace the old rt-n11(no custom firmware can load) and a wl-500gx(lower speed, now with k26 USB 1.28.9054 lite beta), used to link by AP+WDS way of 2 buldings of 10M length, no problem just slower.but...
I have tried all your builds for rt-n12b1, RAF's 079, Shibby's, Oleg's and dd-wrt's builds but all fail to have a stable wireless link at both rt-n12b1 routers, seems not more than 30 minutes, the clint router of rt-n12b1 will become only have tx but no rx flow, set to 20 MHz will last longer than 40 MHz, Shibby's build after setup to be an AP+WDS will brick after reboot, need to be restore firmware, but if I use 1 of rt-n12b1 as a server AP+WDS to link with n-11(hybrid mode) or wl-500gx as clint AP+WDS and they both work fine, except the n12b1 linking each other, any advice? Please help me to solve this problem, BTW, I like your builds, rest functions work fine and thank you in advance.

The fact that all of those

The fact that all of those different firmware builds fail, even those from Oleg which are quite different to Tomato, is worrying me a little. I don't have one of those routers, but something seems to be fundamentally wrong. This won't make you any happier, but reading through the different forums I see a lot of problems reported with those routers.

I'd suggest you post your queries on Linksysinfo.org - there are many Asus users there who might help, this forum is for Netgear primarily.

Thanks.

I'll have to give that a try.  Whats your recommended build? I use USB for a hard drive, and would like the per IP bandwidth monitoring capability.

I think for the other side of my problem - watching whats happening ON LAN with my media center - is going to require me to put in some sort of smart-switch... (any recommendations?)
