Two networks with two routers.

I am using a D-Link DSL-502T as a modem which is set to bridging but has a DHCP server providing 10.0.0.x ip addresses.

This connects to the Internet port on a Netgear R6300v2 in which the ISP logon processes are carried out. It also has a DHCP server running giving ip addresses in the 192.168.1.xx subnet.

I now want to provide VPN (or whatever for my smart TV sets which are wirelessly connected to the R6300. What I am planning on doing is to use a Cisco WRT54G v1.1 which is installed with DD-WRT v23SP1 Final (05/16/06)std.

Can this be done and how do I hook the two routers together? (I can ping the VPN server from an iMac connected to the R6300 but not getting any response to a PC connected to the WRT54G.)

In the mix is a Cisco 2450 switch feeding a PC, Imacs, printers and a VOIP phone. I had contemplated whether to use separate VLANs for the two networks but am loath to do so (only because I can't understand the programming for running VLANs.

Any comments etc much appreciated.

Regards

Roger

Hi

Hi
I like the way you think.
It can be done.
Yes you can use a Vlan in your situation to separate the VOIP port from the VPN.
OK first I am a noob at this DD-WRT but I have gotten VPN and Vlans working perfectly.
I am assuming the VPN server is outside your network seeing you want to use your smart TV to connect to Netflix/blocked Netflix content etc.

You can also use the WRT54G to connect to a VPN server outside your network. Then connect the TV to the WRT54G. The WRT54G will pass through R6300v2 then through the D-Link DSL-502T and to the VPN Server.

Hi Accid

Hi Accid

Thanks for the info.! I will hold on the VLAN approach for now.

I am having issues with the WRT54G router. It is given an ip address of 192.168.1.109 from the R6300 router. The WRT54G gives out ip addresses in the 192.168.2.xxx range. I can ping 192.168.2.1. When I try to ping 192.168.1.1, or 216.227.xxx.yyy (the ip address of my ISP) I get no result. The Status page on the WRT54G shows that my WAN IP address is 192.168.1.109.

I have the WRT54G Internet port connected to a LAN port on the R6300. I have configured the WRT54G using PPTP as the connection type and not using DHCP on the Internet side.

If you could advise me if I have done something wrong and any tips on setting up the WRT54G DD-WRT I would much appreciate it.

In response to your question above, the VPN server I am trying to log into is actually one of the privateinternetaccess servers and is used to get around the geo-blocking by Netflix.

I have a similar situation as

I have a similar situation as Roger and would like to implement two routers also but as of now using a Router and a unmanaged switch which Is less than ideal regarding performance and load balancing and creating a DMZ for Roku and VOIP which I have gotten to work at one time having a different ISP and other Firmware and a reliable PC which I hope to shore up in the near future. Even with good hardware I still know it is far from a "slam dunk" to correctly map out a home Network and useful setup 411 is hard to come by without paying good money for (my case from my education). Maybe try Cisco support or possibly sifting thru the DD-WRT user forums, maybe you'll get lucky. I could offer some assistance but I don't frequent this forum too often. Good luck, Jason.

I am sorry I am the kind of person that needs to see a visual diagram of networks to understand the hows and whys of it. Can you draw a simple one, I would love to see your layout. Drawing it my also simplify it for you.
