R7000 OpenVPN speeds are *slow*

Brand new R7000 running kong's firmware build 25090.  I upgraded my WNDR3400 (10d/2u) to a WNDR4300 (15d/5u) then to the R7000 where I'm getting 30d/5u.  (Mentioned speeds are all on DD-WRT, OpenVPN configured within the router.)  My true ISP connection speed is 50d/5u which is what I get when I run VPN software on my computer rather than router.

Of course VPN hardware seems to be the operating variable here.  But going from 480mhz CPU to 560mhz then to 1ghz dual-core (respectively), I figure I should have been able to get 50d/5u through this router, right?

What's the problem here?  Do I need to figure out how to overclock the R7000 and go that route?  I can't stand being limited to 30 down.  I may as well downgrade my internet plan at this rate...

I yesterday I bought R7000

I yesterday I bought R7000 and installed KONGAC 25090. My IPS is limited 35Mbit/s and my E3000 was limited to 9Mbit/s with the CPU at 100%. With R7000 it maxes out my IPS connection and the CPU tops out at about 30%. The R7000 can easily handle over 100Mbit/s on OpenVPN.

Your issue may be with your IPS, throttling your VPN connection or the distance of your VPN server to your R7000. Most VPN providers give you more than one VPN port number and an option to use TCP or UDP, UDP is faster.

Thanks for the reply. Any

Thanks for the reply. Any remedy for this? Maybe adjusting or disabling the IPS? Protocol is already UDP. PIA script is setup on the R7000 under Administration -> Commands. Not sure what else I can do.

I'm an intermediate with

I'm an intermediate with routers at best, but I don't get it. I have 50d/5u service and honestly don't think that Time Warner is throttling me... Speedtest.net is inaccurate when running thru a VPN but my connection feels right for 50d/5u. On my computer I run VPN software. Just the wireless (thru the R7000) is automatically on VPN. This begs the question... is there any way for TWC to know that I'm running a VPN?

I doubt the r7000's cpu is

I doubt the R7000's cpu is maxed out, but check it for yourself. Telnet into your router and run TOP, now check your VPN speed and look at the cpu usage.

If the R7000's cpu isn't maxed out then your VPN provider must have their software more optimized. I would contact the VPN provider for support about your issue.

Thanks, I'll contact PIA. I

Thanks, I'll contact PIA. I ran TOP in Telnet and ran Speedtest on my phone [connected via WiFi to the router, of course]. CPU usage jumped around but the highest number I ever saw on any speed test was about 34% usage. Not even close to maxed, just as you predicted.
