I have a new R7800 that I wanted to configure for vpn. Just as a benchmark, after taking it out of the box and putting it behind the ISP router, I let it update to latest netgear firmware, then ran a couple speedtests. 450d/500u was the average. I have a gigabit connection, 450 down is from the built in wifi adapter in a dell xps 15, which seems fine.
Flashed to base wrt, ran speedtests, 100/100 was about the best I could get. Updated with Voxel 1.02.36, but it didnt improve the speeds. I made sure to disable 2.4g on the stock as well as on both wrt base and voxel to insure an even test, every speedtest was run against 5g, and of course from the same machine.
What am I missing here? Why is the wrt build so crushingly slow? I can't connect a VPN on top of this when it's starting out at a crippled 100/100.
ISP Router? Might bridge the ISP modem/router if this is the case. Having two routers on the same line isn't good. You can use the modems DMZ for the NG router if he ISP modem can't be bridged.
Besure to speed test with a LAN wired cable PC and disable IPv6 and QoS for speed testing.
What is your ISP speeds you pay for UP and Down?
After further tweaking of settings (following the guide here) I've gotten my speeds up to about 75% of what they were with the netgear firmware. I know there is some speed loss to go to ddwrt, but I don't know how much is expected. Does 25% loss seem normal? QoS is off.
I'd post over on the DD-WRT forum in regards to there FW and settings. I'm currently using VOXELS v37F on my R7800 and see to spec speeds on my 200/10 ISP service with QoS enabled or disabled...There maybe some overhead kept for QoS however usually is no more than 4%.
