Nighthawk X8 & looking for firmware that will get 1gig w/Centurylink

I am using Centurylink Fiber 1Gig and It took forever with Netgear standard firmware just to get the Nighthawk AC5300 C8 (R8500) to login to the internet and it started out at 500 mbs up and down and I finally got it to 900 up and down but it isn't consistent. I had a Asus 5300 and I used Merlin's Firmware and i got 930 up and down but it had issues. I am hopeing some one here can help me out with some ideas. I am going to try to update the firmware on my R8500 but I am not sure if it is just that. any advice?

Most home class routers of

Most home class routers of this generation don't support 1Gb speeds over the WAN port. Best way would be to use a ISP modem/ONT router and then connect up a wireless AC class AP to the router for wireless service.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. Centurylink brings the Fiber to the house and connects it to a ONT Modem then the Cat6 comes into the house. They connect the Cat6 ONT line to their Router but it slows you speed down to about 850 down and if you’re lucky 930 up. The trick is to get firmware that can Tag the WAN port with 201 and you get your PPPOe credentials from Centurylink and if your Netgear router isn’t made in Vietnam you can upload some modified firmware that helps with all this and you can get 945mbs up and down. I was using a Asus R5300 but it only 4 LAN ports and I really needed those extra two ports but oh well. I am going to Fry’s tomorrow and picking up the Asus 8 port or the R3500 and two switches. I noticed the Firmware in the Netgear router to be very simple and there is no way to go into stealth mode. I want to choke the kid that said this one was as good as the one sold about a year ago. Oh well.
Thanks again.
