Best settings to use

Hi all

I am new to DD-WRT and am trying to setup R8000.

I have downloaded and flashed latest kong build released on 4 April 2016 using following steps

restore factory setting ->flash with kong build ->reset using hardware reset button ->configure router

Set up three SSIDs , all are named differently

2.4 band settings are as follows

Wireless Mode
Wireless Network Mode
Wireless Network Name (SSID)

Wireless Channel
Channel Width
Wireless SSID Broadcast

Enable  Disable

Optimize Multicast Traffic

Enable  Disable

TurboQAM (QAM256) support

Enable  Disable

Explicit Beamforming

Enable  Disable

Implicit Beamforming

Enable  Disable

Airtime Fairness

Enable  Disable

Network Configuration

Unbridged  Bridged

1st 5Ghz band uses N-only ,settings below

Wireless Mode

Wireless Network Name (SSID)

Wireless Channel
Channel Width
Extension Channel
Wireless SSID Broadcast

Enable  Disable

Optimize Multicast Traffic

Enable  Disable

Explicit Beamforming

Enable  Disable

Implicit Beamforming

Enable  Disable

Airtime Fairness

Enable  Disable

2nd 5GHZ band settings as below

Implicit Beamforming

Network Configuration

Unbridged  Bridged

Can someone please look at the settings and advise if I am using optimum settings and what band should be used.

Also I am trying to setup a Guest network so that the guest devices will not be able to access the network drives or router settings.

Configured Virtual inteface as below on 2.4Ghz band

Wireless Network Name (SSID)

Wireless SSID Broadcast

Enable  Disable

AP Isolation

Enable  Disable

Optimize Multicast Traffic

Enable  Disable

Network Configuration

Unbridged  Bridged

Multicast forwarding

Enable  Disable

Masquerade / NAT

Enable  Disable

Net Isolation

Enable  Disable

Forced DNS Redirection

Enable  Disable

IP Address

...

Subnet Mask

...

How ever no devices are able to connect to this virtual interface , all devices stuck at "Acquiring IP".

The above settings are configured as suggested  in various posts.

Please help with the settings of virtual interface for guest network.

Thanks

I would be thankful if any can guide or point me to a post which outlines how to force specific devices to use VPN while visiting specific websites.

Thanks

Is the VPN established by your router? If so, you will have to force routing for those public Web sites to go through the vpn tunnel. I don't know why you are doing this. Trying to get around some country block on Web sites? Just use a proxy vpn at the client when needed then.

As far as the best settings

As far as the best settings for your wireless. It really depends on. The devices you are connecting and the environment (interference in the area). Play with the settings and test for a while.

I suggest you enable SSID

I suggest you enable SSID broadcast, at least until you have your wifi configured correctly.

And even when you have things going I would still keep broadcasting my SSID. Hiding your SSID can be more trouble than it's worth. It's one of those "security" featuers that look and sounds great but really can just be a PITA.

I didn't even look at the

I didn't even look at the settings. Hiding you SSID broadcast is actually less secure as every client will broadcast it now asking to see if it is connecting to the correct SSID.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I am able to configure the guest network using the guide by kong and have upgraded the firmware yesterday to the new version released on 24 April 2016 .

Since then the connection seems to drop every few minutes, changing back the Tx power to auto has helped to stabilise the connection.

How ever the maximum speeds are 150 mbps and 27 mbps for the 5GHz connections respectively and 72 for the 2.4Ghz connection.

Has any one loaded tomato firm ware on R8000 and if so is the connection stable?

Also please advice if flashing tomato from dd wrt is ok or if there are any potential problems.

I am also tyring the dual 5G

I am also tyring the dual 5G setup. It is a little trkcky as with some settings, even though they are using different channel/frequencies, one 5G channel is so weak that my phone can only detect it when phone is a few feet away from router. It would drop the connection when I am 10 feet away with open space.

Right now my setting is working while the 5G channel channel is not super fast. It is a little weaker than the 5G1 channel. I tried almost every channel and could not get it to the same signal level.

I just tried the Shibby's tomato for a few days, overall the router's signal is much stronger. So I guess default signal power setting with dd-wrt is higher than tomato. So I flashed back to dd-wrt.  Here is my settings, at least it is working. All AC devices tied to 5G1, N to 5G. I have a Fire TV Stick in bedroom, I installed Kodi on it to stream from HD connected to router. With dd-wrt it streams 1080P without problem, but with Tomato, it bufferes from time to time and I cannot live with it.

I've got a few questions that I need help with.

Over the 4th July long weekend, I successfully flashed x8000 to latest Kong Build.  I found that LAN port speeds were far slower than stock Netgear firmware, WiFi range was far less than stock and I was not able to change Tx Pwr. It would lockup firmware and when I re-engaged login, the Tx Pwr was the same as default DDRT settings.

I then reverted to stock Netgear firmware and restored to saved settings.

Any suggestions?

I will try these settings

I will try these settings sugessted as well. If they don't work to increase the signal I may try to revert back to the original netgear firmware.

Thank you
