Hi Everyone - First Post

Hi guys,

This is my first post here. I'm a router noob (though I'm a bit of a computer and xbox nerd), so please be gentle with the comments.

I have a new WNR3500L, my very first router. Can anyone tell me what firmware you use and why you think it's best?

I have a bias to Tomato and Tomato based firmware, like Toastman because of 3 reasons:

1. A couple years ago Maximum PC reviewed the then Tomato firmware and I believe it got a 9.0, which is very very high for them. And those guys know their stuff.

2. 2 of my friends, both self proclaimed router nerds, use Tomato.

3. In one of your pages:

http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/18273/How-To-Maximize-Wireless-Perfo...

The author used Tomato firmware as his base to 'Maximize Wireless Performance'.

So having not used it myself, these are the reasons I think Tomato is best.

I have run both DD-WRT and

I have run both DD-WRT and Tomato on my WNR3500L

Right now on my main router I run DD-WRT because it seems to be a bit better on wireless but that may just be my experience.

I would try either one and if you have issues with your setup try the other.

Every third party firmware

Every third party firmware have its own expertise in some specific features (along-with the basic features).
As it is your first router I would rather suggest you to stick with Stock firmware for few days. Try to identify the features you are using mostly, then go for a third party firmware that gives the best performance on that field.
