my own secure and encrypted internet vpn proxy?

Hi there!

I was wondering if it is possible to set up a service that would work like this:

• connect from anywhere outside (e.g. public wifi)
• start a vpn tunnel to my home's netgear WNR3500L (IP provided via a dynamic dns service)
• access a file server on my home network
• access the internet via my home's adsl connection

Questions:

• Do I need a separate software to be installed on the remote laptop or is it browser based?
• I should note that WNR3500L is plugged in an ethernet port of the Thomson TG 585 v8 modem/router that my internet provider... provides(!) -- of course, wireless is deactivated on the Thomson.  That would mean that there's some setting up to be done on that one too, right?
• Any chance there's a guide on how this can be set up?
