I've read the official site method for the tomato install. My question is, if I select the Tomato firmware from the Netgear (WNR3500L) interface what should I expect to happen? Will it brick my router?

If you try to update directly from the stock firmware it will just tell you that it's incompatible and won't attempt an upgrade.
