TomatoUSB by Shibby - Must erase all data in NVRAM memory when upgrading?

I have successfully upgraded my Netgear WNR3500Lv2 from tomato-Netgear-3500Lv2-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x--100-AIO.chk (Tomato by Shibby, All In One) to *--101-AIO.chk (released 2012-09-19), but the upgrade didn't go smooth.

At first try, I DID NOT check "After flashing, erase all data in NVRAM memory". This left the router in a state where it responded to "ping", but nothing else. (The address was before the upgrade.)

A hard 30/30/30 reset didn't change anything. I thought the router was bricked, but inspired by , I managed to restore the old firmware by power cycling it and from a connected Linux PC simultaniously issueing the following command repeatedly until success:

$ ifconfig eth0 && ping -c 1 && tftp < tftp-cmds

$ cat tftp-cmds
put tomato-Netgear-3500Lv2-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x--100-AIO.chk

At second try, I DID check "After flashing, erase all data in NVRAM memory" and the upgrade went fine. Is checking this box neccessary, and if so should it be removed, or at least be checked by default?

I'm not aware of it being a necessary step, but it's always recommended. (In fact, I think most experts would say that a 30-30-30 should be performed before and after any upgrade at all)

Let's see if Toastman can fill us in on whether it's actually required for the flash, though. I seem to remember flashing several builds with this box unchecked and everything going fine, but my memory fails me sometimes :)

Hello Peter,

Hello Peter,
I am a new member and don't know much about routers and iptv firmware. I would like to do some experiment and would like to learn from this forum.
This may be silly question to you but it will help me to think more about the idea I have.
I would like to design a device which should look like jadoo iptv device but function differently.
I would like to have a device that can bring my website from that device as we generally do with the router to see router pages by typing eg. 192.168.2 .1. Also I would like to access all the ports from the device such as USB, hdmi, all lights, rj45 port etc( jadoo iptv has all the ports). Is it doable ?
Any help in this regards will be appreciated.
