upgrade between different tomato versions

currently running version

Tomato Firmware v1.28.9053 MIPSR2-beta K26 USB Ext

and want to uprade to latest Toastman's f/w. 

Can I upgrade directly to Toastman, or via dd-wrt or ??

Do I need to clear nvram after flashing ? before flashing ?

You can go directly to

You can go directly to Toastman's Tomato version. You don't have to clear nvram but some folks prefer to just to make sure it's a cleaner upgrade.

You can update to a newer

You can update to a newer version without erasing the settings. I believe most people back up their settings, upgrade and erase everything and then when it reboots either change the settings manually or restore the backup.

If you restore your old

If you restore your old configuration then you have effectively restored exactly what you just erased.
