Hi,
I just found a very interesting project on sourceforge - USB IP.
The project is aimed to provide possibility to forward raw usb protocol over IP network to another host. As a result, you could connect for example an usb camera, or linux-unsupported scanner to the router equiped with usb, and then attach this device through wifi to your laptop running windows.
Did anyone tried to port this functionality into any of community softwares, such as dd-wrt, tomato or any other?
Is any of the alternative softwares for WNR3500L running 2.6 kernel? I think the project provides drivers for 2.6 series only.
I am especially interested in this functionality, cause I own a Brother printer/scanner, and brother provides only x86 and x86_64 linux binary sane-backends, and no source code, so scanner is unusable :(
With USB-IP I would be able to work with the scanner the same way like I would with scanner plug inserted into usb port of my laptop...
Best regards,
SWilk
AVM has something similar in their firmwares. USB-IP seems to be superior to their implementation.
DD-WRT and Tomato use kernel 2.6 series.
Definitely sounds like something I should consider adding to my builds.
Sorry, duplicate entry. Please remove...
I'm looking at using USB/IP to connect my Tomtom GPS to a small Linux-PC in the car. I could then bridge the USB connection from the GPS via the Linux PC to a Windows PC in the house over WiFi and never need to remove the GPS from the car. If USB/IP was available in Open/DD-WRT I would only need one small AP with USB, not a complete Linux PC!
To start with, I needed 3G access in the car (travel a lot in my job as IT consultant) and bought a 3G/WiFi router. I was thinking about adding a function to sense if the car was still around, or if it was stolen (out of reach for WiFi...). Then I realized I could connect the GPS too, and then you could... Well, anything is possible if you have unlimited time, right?
Keep up the good work (both xxxWRT and USB/IP-guys)!
I've been tinkering around with USBIP for quite some time now, but I think I got it working ...
With these files I am able to load the kernel modules, share a usb stick and open it up on my windows notebook.
The kernel modules are for the DD-WRT 2.6.23/2.6.24.111 kernel on broadcom devices and the ipk files are for DD-WRT with Optware enabled.
Try it for yourself and give feedback if possible...
