Remote Desktop Mac to Mac

Not sure how I can't find an answer on the internet to this but I digress..

So I have ssh enabled to my router via home network as well as remotely.

As for remote desktop, I am able to access my machines using this method while on my house hold network.

However, I cannot figure out how to do this remotely (not on my home network).

Looking at the the Netgear GUI -> advanced ->advanced setup -> Port Forwarding / Port Triggering . I added a machine (another mac static 192.168.1.2 ) with a external/interanl port of 21 (port 21 is both open/verified via netwall.conf file & net-wall rule    cat /tmp/netwall-rules).

Trying to ssh into the machine in question, I try my router's ip address XXX.XXX.XX.XXX:21 (note I am using the public IP not 192.168.1.1). Is this incorrect?

I would assume remote desktop would take a few more steps/ config on top of this but I would "think" being able to ssh into the machine would be the fist step. As far as tutorials go most of them use TCP connection, however in our GUI "Port Forwarding / Port Triggering" that is not an option, so wondering what type of connection I should I use? Most tutorials use TCP for remote desktop connections but that does not exist as an option.
