wireless rate fluctuation

I've been using DD-WRT for a while on my WRT54GS. However, I wanted to upgrade to an N router so I choose the WNR3500L. I was able to install DD-WRT without a hitch but I noticed from the get go my wireless rate was never really stable so I tweaked and played with my settings to no avail. Today I flashed to Tomato in the hopes of regaining the stability I had with my old 54GS but this problem still persists. Does anyone have any suggestion on how I can stabilize my wireless rate?

I'm on a network with a mix of wireless G and N devices if you need to know.

My apologizes.

My apologizes.
I usually get 5.5, 11, and occasionally 24mbps
I have a bunch of things connected but I fear the culprit might be my laptop in the basement which is one floor down and in a corner room.
I am using 40.
I'm on channel 3 also.

on a side not. I went back to DDWRT and it seems much more stable now. I am at a lose on what the issue is.

Since the wnr3500l has

Since the wnr3500l has internal antennas it may help if you experiment with different positions, see:

Is the laptops wireless card

Is the laptops wireless card a N or g model?
Your location is pretty much like mine one floor down through 30cm concrete with lots of steel in it, but even with only 2mW TX Power I get a perfect signal. But I'm using an N client card.

I actually replaced my unit.

I actually replaced my unit. I think that might have been the problem and I'm stable around 36mbps, which was normal for my old router too. The laptop supports G only but I'm probably going to upgrade to N sometime soon.

Yes, you can and should prioritize your 'work' pc's over the others.
You're running in Mixed Mode, which will result in fluctuation and less than N speeds to the N router. Get N 'usb' dongles for the G devices and put the network in N only mode for optimal performance.
