Overclocking

Has anyone overclocked their R6400 to 1000?  If so, are there any issues? Is it possible to go higher?

Haven't tried it yet but very

Haven't tried it yet but very curious. I'm almost tempted to go for it but I really don't wan't to take the chance of bricking it. If I do end up trying it I'll post back and let you know how it went.

Ok. Went ahead and decided to

Ok. Went ahead and decided to give it go. I took a chance and jacked it up to 1Ghz. Before I did that I made note of the CPU temp as read by the firmware which at the time was reading around 58C. @ 800 Mhz. After switching to 1Ghz the router rebooted and came back to life with no problem and the temp didn't even seem to increase at all. As of this posting I have been running at 1Ghz for about 4 days now and everything is running smoothly. Can't say for sure that I notice any performacnce increase but then again a haven't done any extensive testing either. So in conclusion I would say its safe to try for anybody who was considering it but hesitant. Good luck.

After seeing your post of

After seeing your post of 1ghz with no temperature change i've decided to try going to 1200mhz. the 7000 is tested at 1400 stable, so im gonna try it out. will report back.

ok im doing something wrong.

ok im doing something wrong. im following a set of command shell instructions for an R7000. they arent changing my clock speed on my r6400. what do i need to be putting into the command shell?

Justice,

Can't help you with the command shell. That's not how I went about overclocking my router. If you are using DD-WRT its just a matter of going to the< Administration> tab then <Management> then scroll down near the bottom of the page and you should see a drop down for Overclocking.

I haven't been brave enough to try anything past 1Ghz. So far 1Ghz is very stable. Let us know how 1.2Ghz works for you if you can get to it.

ok, havent checked this

ok, havent checked this thread since the last time i posted. just followed your instructions for overclocking and i feel slightly dumb for attempting this in command shell before. Thank you for the heads up xerxes. I am now running at 1Ghz stable, and temperature readout is as follows:  CPU 61.4 °C / WL2 800896076.00 °C

Is there a "no-no" temperature? What should i consider the threshold for safe operation? Under 72 C?

I have already received over a 10% bandwidth boost going to 1Ghz using privateinternetaccess vpn with router as client.

Ok, I went for it. Upload

Ok, I went for it. Upload speeds remain mostly constant, but downloads keep going up as i overclock higher. Currently at 1.2 Ghz, no issues so far. I think i will hold at this for a few days and see if temperature stays around 61-62 degrees C, then go for 1.4Ghz. If I turn my vpn off i get 85-90 mbps so im trying to bite down on the encryption time since im only at 30mbps at 1.2Ghz. Was at 23 at 800mhz.

I gotta give you credit

I gotta give you credit Justice, you're a braver soul than I. I don't know what the upper tolerance level is with these broadcom chips. I also went ahead to 1.2Ghz but I don't think I'm going to go any further than that. I look forward to hearing how your experiment goes.

Haha...ok, lets just say...

Haha...ok, lets just say....not well. at 1.4 it wouldnt boot, and just stayed in it's starting up phase indefinitely. I thought it was quasi-bricked. I had to do a hard reset (30-30-30) and start all over setting everything up from scratch. Now i have an image of my router settings saved for the off chance that this happens for any other reason.

So in summary for this thread: 1.2 Gigahertz is super stable and doesnt generate excessive heat. 1.4 is a no-go. Still, at 1.2 Ghz, i have roughly 50% increase in DL speed with my vpn running than at the stock 800. My next project (not in the immediate future) will be buying the $280 Asus that comes with a 1.6 Ghz processor for the help of faster encryption for my vpn.

I've tried mine on 1000Mhz,

I've tried mine on 1000Mhz, works fine.

1200Mhz works, but every 30 Minutes there is a 2-3 Second internet Freeze. it doesn't disconnect. it just freezes all traffic for 1-3 seconds.
