Many MyOpenRouter members and NETGEAR router enthusiasts are familiar with Tomato, a streamlined open source firmware for Broadcom based routers that is full of functionality and flavor. You may have used, or seen, the famous Shibby builds of Tomato, for example.
The AdvancedTomato project has come together with members and developers in the community to develop new firmwares, based on Tomato, with a significantly updated and refreshed user interface (UI.)
In addition to the new look and feel, AdvancedTomato comes packed with additional features:
- New user-friendly GUI
- New bandwidth usage monitor
- More advanced QOS and access restrictions
- New wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes
- Higher P2P maximum connections limit, the ability to run custom scripts,
- Connect via telnet/ssh,
- Reprogram the SES/AOSS button
- Perform wireless site survey
The AdvancedTomato project credits other contributors, such as fellow developers Shibby and Johnathan Zurate, for making the project possible.
Head on over to our Downloads area to grab AdvancedTomato updates (ensure that you check the AdvancedTomato site as well to see if your router requires an "inifial" build before flashing the latest updates)

Great UI but I was never able to enable WiFi AC mode on a R7000 router so I'll stay with DD-WRT :)
R7000 AC speeds work using US & Singapore as WiFi settings. That's due to closed drivers source and Tomato is unable to init all. DD-WRT has no such issue since they have license to compile their own drivers =)
Hi AdvanceTomato, i just tumbled onto your site when searching on how to install ExpressVPN on my Netgear Nighthawk router. Currently running on stock Firmware V1.0..12_1.2.23. Would it be possible to install Tomato just by following Shibby's video? First time dealing into open source on the router. Did some jail-breaking on the older models of iPhone before, not sure if that helps..
I just got fiber (1000/1000) and am currently using DD-WRT but now realize this is crippling my speeds. As I understand it, Tomato uses CTF by default? Do I need to flash back to stock Netgear firmware or can I just flash AT over DD-WRT?
FYI, using DD-WRT v3.0-r31575M kongac (03/21/17) build.
Can you try to support the router of R7800?
@sesser: Flash back to NETGEAR stock FW/Genie FW before flashing to AT. Otherwise, you would potentially brick your router!!!
Special charectors are not supported in WPA key. That is a show stopper for me.
Yeah basically. But before I got into this flashing thing I got my self USB-TTL cable just in case ^^. And honestly it has helped me many times to unbrick router from bad flash or any other problem with NVRAM, full storage and so on.
can you create firmware for R8500?
Great firmware (R8000, running advancedtomato 3.5 -140 for a couple of weeks now) with a lof of additional fuetures that Genie lacks, like NFS server, bittorrent client, adblocker, and a lot more. But the only thing i cannot get to work is DHCP so i had to set fixed IP addresses for all my devices.
Does this solve the issue that WAN-performance is +/-10% of capacity offered by my ISP? WAN NIC is set to 100 M/b whereas the connection should be 1000 M/b and, even with CTF, speeds are low with my latest Shibby FW...
what is defult password and user name
Will R8500 be available?
