Need to buy a new Router - Wireless N or G?

An "N" router will NOT help on the internet! A "G" router is rated at 45 Mb while the fastest internet around me is 25 Mb; and it is very expensive! Most people have 5 Mb to 10 Mb.

However, 802.11g normally caps out at about 20 to 25 Mb/s usable bandwidth - regardless of what the nominal link rate is.

Also, while the fastest link around you is 25 Mb/s, I know people with 50 Mb/s and it's a tiny cost increase over my existing link, where I live. The same ISP is also testing speeds of 100 Mb/s and above. Your sample, and mine, aren't representative of everybody ;)

Definitely go with a Wireless N router. After all it's the latest and greatest in wireless technology. You'll increase your speeds VERY nicely. I would recommend the WNDR3700 netgear router. It features dual band technology, usb storage, WPA2 encryption, and wireless N support!

We bought a netgear n600 WNDR3400 dual band wireless router, my son's hp laptop works fine, my emachine laptop will only work if I connect through the unsecure band, if I try to connect through the secure band I get local access only. After 1 hour on the phone with netgear in India was told that we would have to contact emachine to find a way to make it work. If we hook up old netgear G router everything works fine. Are there some computers not compatible with N routers? I do not want to call emachines so will likely return the router, what should I buy next or any suggestions to try before returning? My son really wants to stay with N router for his gaming.

I have bought a LINKSYS router - RB-WRT160N-RM. It is not getting detected by my laptop I am afraid that is it due to the N and G generation. I was not aware before buying the router abt N and G routers.

Kindly suggest me any way to get it working.

from what i read so far i cant get any wireless N benefit through a pc with a G card, but can i get those benefits if my pc (laptop or desktop) is wired to the N router(Netgear WNDR3700 for example)and if i adapt the Netgear WNDA3100 can i get the wireless benefits of the N router?

Hi - sorry, I'm not sure what I'm doing. I have a laptop (Windows Vista) that's about 2 or 3 years old, and it's hooked into a Linksys WRT54G2 router, which also has an Xbox linked into it. The router is going to my cable modem. This is all done with cables - no wireless (also, everything is no more than 4 feet from everything else). If I ignore the router and connect the computer directly to the modem, I'm getting download speeds of about 19 and upload speeds of about 9. However, if I run the computer through the router, the best I can get is download of about 1 and upload of 0.24. Also, the router very often blocks all access to the internet, just whenever it feels like it. I've spent around 12 hours on the phone with Cisco "support" who generally don't bother to try to help, and just try to sell me an N router. I've tried everything I can think of - does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate any help (and hope). Thanks!!

Ah this model really sucks. You don't want to use this router if you do more then simple web browsing with one client.

The hardware is this unit is very limited not much ram slow cpu.
Do P2P with it and this router slows down pretty fast.

The problems you mentioned are typical signs of overloading, the router runs out of ram and then you cannot build up any new connections, of course this also causes the router to slow down.

Return this thing or sell it on ebay.
In the same price range I recommend:

Linksys WRT54GL
Linksys WRT160N
Netgear WNR2000
Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N

If you add few more bucks you'll get a router that can do much more with real routing performance.

I got a wndr3400 netgear router. Does anyone have any tips on setting this one up? I find it does not work as well as mt Linksys G router did. I get poor signal in my garage computer, where my Linksys router got good signal. I tought the N router was supposed to have more range.

N router just have more range if it is used together with N clients.

I am using a WN111 for the garage.

I've been looking up the ones that you mentioned. Is there a favorite among them, one that you'd most recommend for someone who'll be using it with a computer, Xbox, (soon-to-be-added) PS3 and who (this is kinda obvious) likes gaming, especially playing with friends over the internet?

@Tanya, Since I'm using a WNR3500L myself I can say this router is the best I've had so far. In 6 month I didn't have to reboot this unit once to resolve any issue. The WRT54GL is known to be a good unit too. The WNR3500L + tomato firmware or my dd-wrt mod you can even use it as a media streaming server for your xbox, which is a nice feature too.

I heard if you have a mixed bag (N and G devices) the router will revert to G speeds and I won't realize any benefit of upgrading my router to N unless I change out my remaining devices to N capabilities.
