Netgear R8000P aka X6S

Hi All,

Does anyone know if the newly released Netgear R8000P (aka X6s) has the same chipset as the R8000 (X6). I can't find any information on it and wanted to re-flash my X6S to an opensource firmware build. If not, any idea when a ddwrt build for teh X6S will be available??

Thanks in advance,

//NH

Not Seeing any information on

Not Seeing any information on this. I to have a R7900P. What is the status on this. Do other firmware versions work with it, and that is why we dont see any commentary. Or is this router not OpenSource like the brochures that sold it. It says on them directly that OpenSource from MyOpenRouter is workable on this router.

Has anyone got any idea about this? I have just bought an R8000P (X6S) and would like to know whether I can flash it with Advanced Tomato, which only seems to have firmware for the older R8000 (X6) router...

I'm asking as well! Have an X6S (R8000P) and want to know if I can use the 8000 firmware or if a "P" version has to be developed. :)

I really want to know this as

I really want to know this as well. I hope for a future DD-WRT with OpenVPN client mode. Hopefully someone that's know more will write in this thread. I ordered this router today. So I'm very excited about this.

The processor will be perfect for running OpenVPN at high speeds.

I'm holding my fingers crossed here. It's time to unleash the inner beauty of this beast. The only way to do that would be awesome DD-WRT on it!!!!

You should NEVER flash wrong

You should NEVER flash wrong firmware....!!!!!!!! You could "brick" your Device!! Not the same chip...CPU....etc.

I have a R8000P in use and

I have a R8000P in use and would ask for open source code firmware too. It would seem to be a hardware update of CPU starved R8000, which should support better throughput for the "need for speed" apps. Hope to see some word on availibility.

Like everyone else in this

Like everyone else in this thread, I bought an R8000P/X6S assuming I could run DD-WRT on it.  Heck, I just noticed that the manual even points to this website!

I guess I should have dug deeper before buying it.  The silence here is deafening :-(

Both Kong and Brainslayer are

Both Kong and Brainslayer are more then intrested to make DD-WRT become true for this lovely router. All we have to do is to make donations because they don't have the hardware.

Kong told me that he reached out for his contact at Netgear.......hopefully they will support him.

Ahh...thanks for the context.

Ahh...thanks for the context.  Well, that makes perfect sense, though it blows my mind that a huge company that actually touts its open access and includes this website in its manual would even hesitate to get them a unit. That's just a no-brainer, so hopefully they come through for the guys.  Let us know if not.

A rumor from DD-WRT forum says that BS has his hands on a unit. Keep fingers crossed that this will be reality ASAP. And don't forget to give him donations for his fantastic work!

Many people around the world would literally cut of a finger to make that wish become true!!!!!!

Ok so the quick explanation

Ok so the quick explanation is that the R8000P is a more powerful router than the R8000, hence the 1.8ghz cpu on the R8000P vs the 1.0 ghz cpu on the R8000, which means that porting a firmware to it would take a bit on time. Now since both router use the same internal configuration what you could do is download Kong’s R8000, open the file with an Hex editor and change the board id to match the R8000P and that would allow you to try DD WRT for the R8000 on your R8000P. Let me know if you need anymore help.

I just found this website

I just found this website/forum group.  I have a Nighthawk R8000P and am curious about possible firmware updates.  I am also interested in if there will be anupdate anytime soon.

Thanks for all that you guys do to make these products better!

Hi there. I wouldn't hope for

Hi there. I wouldn't hope for to much unfortenately. It seems to me that Netgear has abandoned this ship for several months ago. They are just pumping out new models with poor support and they are loosing customers worldwide everyday because of their unprofessional behaviour.

And also we where more than unlucky because Brainslayer himself had a unit sent to him by Netgear but it got broken. That's a pity!!
So it seems to me that also alternative firmware dreams got broken in that part of the story.

The routers seems cursed and I can honestly tell that I'm happy with my new router Asus RT-AC86U with extremely Good support from Merlin.

If you can....do yourself a favour and drop all dreams about R8000P.

Sorry to tell you this

Best regards / Henrik Sweden

I also just upgraded to a X6S

I also just upgraded to a X6S from the X4S for various reasons.  The OEM firmware right now is pretty solid on it's features.  It WILL drop Device Type and Device Names in Attached Devices randomly and the Dev teams knows this and is working on a fix.  It DOES however hold the Priorities for the devices.  I've had varrying results on Bufferbloat from A-C but throughput has never been an issue with this device in a 4206 sq ft home with signal (even from the second 5Ghz Channel) going to the edge of my property, passing the boundaries of my home.  The hardware for this unit is definately a beast but you have to realize it's not just about the hardware but this unit uses 1024QAM as well instead of the usual 256QAM.  If someone could just refine the FW for this router, it would be such a beast of a unit with 1.8Ghz Dual Core, 512MB RAM, Tri-Channel, QoS, 1024QAM, etc.  It's a serious beast in terms of HW. BTW I honestly don't know what NG was thinking with the R8000 unit, I mean a Tri-Band router with only 256MB RAM and SU-MIMO?????  That just says it all. Thank GOD they got it right in the 8000P version, honestly like I said with proper FW this router would be top notch for sure!

One of the more recent

One of the more recent patches to the stock firmware seems to have sorted out the device type/name issue (finally!) and added a handful more types in general.

I actually was picking the brain of one of the netgear guys at PAX East this year about it, they were offering a discount on the new pro gaming routers, but my hesitation was that I have teenagers, so I've been using the Circle features with the x6s. The pro gaming routers did have some waaay better logging capabilities compared to the x6s, so it was really tempting.

That being said, I'm also eyeing Firewalla Gold, which is scheduled to release in July this year and does have vlan support, and could handle the Parental controls, plus built in vpn.

Hello, couple questions.

Hello, couple questions.

Did this work for you? Any chance in bricking your router?

Do you know what the X6S board ID is?

cheers,
