Remember that the XR FW wasn't really ment to be supported on the R7800. Even though it was early Alpha and Beta tested, Going foward, NG is using actual XR HW to develop FW on. Also there is new FW out there. So issues may differ. There are differences between the R7800 and XR HW.

Actual XR FW works on my XR450 HW.

gtse, first of all what are

gtse, first of all what are you internet speeds?  I agree that QoS is not working in any firmware for this router since it is broken with the OEM code.  Voxel and Vortex use the base code given by the NG devs where the QoS tools are broken.  As I've stated before I have an open case with NG since 12-7-2018 and they swear up and down they'll make it right.  I haven't had a beta since *.62 so as soon as I get something that works I'll be giving it up to the devs here that will make it better.  As for NetDumaOS - I've also noticed things don't work, not just with QoS but also with GeoFiltering.  I think it's also broken for XR500 owners as well so don't feel too bummed about it - it's a work in progress.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply.

My line is a 50mbit VDSL connection (50/10) and I have set the Anti-Bufferbloat setting to 90% and When High Priority Traffic Detected.

Tried the Always setting too, same result with pings...

I had read your previous post but didn't understand that it referred to the state of the current modded fw Xvortex had released, my bad.

In this case, it seems that I will have to switch back to my RT-A66U router with advanced tomato as it handles QOS just fine until I read here that a working modded fw is available. QOS and client restrictions are my main needs from my router and if those don't work well, the router is useless to me.

2 quick questions?

Do you know if my 7800 is supported by any other modded fw like advanced tomato, etc which I could use until DumaOS is sorted?

Is there a way to set in the router options for certain clients to use a specific DNS? I am asking as I run certain devices with a specific DNS to connect through my VPN (AppleTV, etc).

Many thanks!

I usually keep AB at 99% on

I usually keep AB at 99% on my router. I'm the only one gaming at night while everyone else is not using the internet so gaming can have all it needs. I know this isn't probably feasable for everyone. Have you checked DD-WRT and OpenWRT for support?

Not everyone is as lucky as

Not everyone is as lucky as you laugh

Even so, I think you need at least 3-5% of your bandwidth capped to get a good bufferbloat score.

Have you tested your router on dslreports?

My wife and daughter usually stream series on Netflix so I need that feature to work. I haven't found any other modded fw's for this router, unfortunately...

All the time.

All the time.

Have you tried going back to prior working FW versions? I know Voxels 34 or 39SF series was pretty good back then and I believe QoS core was good then from NG. I'd have to take a look at my archive to see what I had back then. Something to try.

DD-WRT supports the R7800. Thought I presume there core QoS is based off NGs code and thus may have same issues in latest versions...something to try as well.

Said that there was new changes on how the FW is placed on router. No time frame and it would take longer to figure out.

The 62 firmware from NG is

The 62 firmware from NG is faulty still.  5Ghz band drops still and the QoS tools still fails when renaming and assigning device type in attached devices.  All in all it's the same BS they put out time after time, telling us it fixes this and that and in the end it's still a bunch of lies. I swear Netgear devs are the laziest, sloppiest and absolute worst devs I've ever seen coming from a big name company like Netgear.  Absolute dogshit.

I haven't tried DD-WRT yet

I haven't tried DD-WRT yet for this router.  Honestly I've used DD-WRT before on other routers and it's alright but not exactly what I'm looking for on this router.  I really liked VorteX's XR500 variant of the 7800 FW but most of the XR's features didn't work like GeoFiltering.  Voxel's FW is basically like an OEM NG FW but with some enhancements.  I would really like Netgear to get their butts in gear and get this router's FW working the way it should.  There's really no excuse to not have 100% working FW for a product that's over 3 years old. That's just bad, sloppy and lazy software devs on Netgear's part.

e38BimmerFN
e38BimmerFN's picture
well theres other things

well theres other things beside GeoFiltering that doesn't work with the modded XR FW.

Voxels Is pretty good, however limted by the core bugs that NG hasn't fixed yet.

Ya, Not sure how much longer the R7800 is going to be supported. Getting long in the pants as far as that goes with this router.

I think NG experienced devs probably have either left or moved on to other pastures. NG seems to struggle in putting out stable and solid FW these days.

Well, I've decided to give DD

Well, I've decided to give DD-WRT a chance, flashed my R7800 today.

OK, the interface is not my fancy and there way more options than I would like to deal with but then again I guess that experience users will have a lot of fun with those. I have set my wifi settings the way I like, set some QOS settings based on mac address priority and set access restrictions for my daughter. Will see how it goes. Bloatware settings on dslreports look good at the moment, have to test in-game to see if all is good.

If you were going to replace your rooter with a new gaming router with good QOS options, which one would y'all go for??

I'm liking my XR450. Does

I'm liking my XR450. Does pretty good for two consoles online at the same time playing same game. I think the XR500 is good too, though seems to be Experiencing some FW issues. I tried the TP-Link C5400X Nice router and such. Seems good for a single game console. Not good for two or more playing same game. Very disappointed in there support forums. Zero repsonce from anyone at TP-Link to questions I had. I did a FW upgrade on the router, could not downgrade FW on it. Thus it was sent back. Not a fan of TP-Link. Bad business practices.

Heard good things about ASUS RT-5300 gaming router. Acquaintence has one. Likes his. Even better with Merlin FW on it. I tested there RT3100, good router too with Merlin on it.

D-Links DIR-890L is good for single console gamers. Unfortunately two or more playing same game is not. They took out FULL CONE NAT in there routers which works well for two or gaming consoles for security reasons. Reason why I like NG routers, they still give you the option for FULL CONE NAT. D-Links last gaming router, the DGL-5500 was a bust no thanks to Qualcomm. We had high hopes and seemed like a good router. What a bad rollar coaster ride that was. angry There old DGL-4500 was the greatest back then.

You might check out Asus routers and give one a try. Merlin supports them big time for 3rd Party FW.

I am currently running DumaOs

I am currently running DumaOs but would like to go to a different FW, but having issue loading the new firmware. When I select the file and load it via the web interface, it shows as loading but nothing happens. I have tried multiple times and similar results. Any suggestion?

On a separate note, does anyone have any suggestion on what to check as lately I am getting HORRIBLE wifi speeds. So much so that I cannot even do Skype calls with it so I have to resort to my cellphone hotspot. I'm on Comcast gig network and I'm getting barely 200 Mbps on Wifi

I have tried restarting modem and router but not much luck. PC that is directly connected to router works fine.

It would be nice if we were

It would be nice if we were given a little more info on this.  Really the only difference between the R7800 and the XR500 is the flash size and header.  So it is more than just a header change, it needs to be recompiled so that it only addresses the amount of flash storage that the R7800 has.  If someone like XVortex just simply laid out for us how to do that, we wouldn't have to wait for him or anyone, we could make the latest XR500 firmware for out R7800 with ease at that point and not be reliant on others anymore.

Sorry to say this but

Sorry to say this but comments like this make developer like Xvortex simply vanish or distribute the modded fw's in private forums. If I am not mistaken DumaOS is a proprietary software licensed to Netgear that adds quite a steep premium to their XR500 model. I am greatful for what he has done up to now, got a chance to check it out without paying that premium.

In any case, it seems like I will be skipping any new version of DumaOS. The interface is nice n all but the main reason I wanted to try it was it's supposedly good QOS that leads to low bufferbloat. Since trying it, I have tried a multitude of other fw's for my 7800.

DD-WRT served me well for a while till I found OpenWRT. Lede's SQM has given me by far the best and most consistent bufferbloat scorer (A+ all around). It's a pain seting up the whole router if you are a novice but in all I am pretty happy.

Been running DUMAOS FW on my

Been running DUMAOS FW on my R7800 (R7800 V2.2.1.10-DBG-XR356-180522a) for a number of weeks; supporting 3 very active gamers plus a streamer in the house. The backbone of the network is a high end cisco managed switch which im sure is taking a huge burden off of the router... Thus the experience is very positive in terms of performance; with Bufferbloat varying from A+ A+ A+ to worst case A+ A  A+.

I do however seem to have a security problem that I do not fully understand and cannot solve. To my surprise; GRC Shields Up! shows port 22 as open despite my not having any management configured on the router nor on the LAN devices. If I attempt to connect via Putty from the WAN side... I get a connection refused via telnet or "no supported authentication methods available... server sent public key..."

Anyone else come across this or indeed have a view on how to close down the port?

@cryo2000, you have been using the stock firmware from the XR500 or Voxel's on your R7800?

What happens if you load

What happens if you load stock R7800 or Voxels R7800 FW on the R7800? Is port 22 still open?

You sure nothing else connected to the router while GRC testing is connected accept for just 1 wired PC? Make sure ALL other devices are turned OFF or disconnected while GRC testing. Ensure your PC is not opening the port as well. Close down ALL apps accept for just 1 web browser. Try different browsers to be sure.

FYI, DUMA OS is not supported or legal to run on the R7800. Do at your own risk and there is no support for it at all. Only meant for the XR series of routers.
