But it works fine on the stock firmware, and also i connected to the router with dumaOS using telnet and tried to start samba manually, but it just won't start no matter what. Also on the dumaOS build there is samba 3.6.25 where on the stock it is 4.6.4...
XVortex, Just got a R7800 and tried your X500 modded firmware.
Thank you so much
Does samba work for you? Do you have access to a USB drive connected to the router?
XVortex,
I have tried this method from Voxel's readme.docx which I use on his firmware, and it worked. It is not working on your port firmware. What could be wrong? Thank you for the great firmware. Everything works as it should. Bufferbloat works, QOS works, Naming devices work. Didn't work on the other firmware. The router almost went to the dump!!!
Has anyone else been able to get SSH working?
Anyone on the SSH issue?
This has to be the deadest forum I've ever been on!!
Xvortex can you please help?

Got SSH working fine. Cancel the question.
Hi,
I downloaded XVortex's XR500 firmware mod for the X4S Nighthalk R7800 and it gets rejected by the Firmware Update tool as being incorrect. For that matter also the latest firmware file from Netgear gets rejected for some strange reason. Bran new router!
Thanks

Sorry for double post guys. Must have hit the submit button twice. Got it working with the XR500 R7800 modded firmware (second one). Had to let the router auto update itself off of the internet. No idea why it rejected an actual R7800 firmware manually though the web version was different. At first it was really slow though going through its initialization routine. Had to hard reset the router to clear its nvram and directly connect it to a computer. Now works like a charm now. Too bad about Samba not working but got a Samba server on another Tomato-Usb Asus router so no big deal. Only wish there was a way to up the transmit power levels as the signal strength is coming up a little weak but connects in anycase.
Thank you everyone who made this mod possible.
Moderator please delete double post. Thank you.
Hello, I tried this and bricked my router the first time (no problem though just called netgear and they assumed it was their faul) now I want to install this and do it right so if someone could please give me a little step guide or just a helping hand thank you!
@freakreagan, I,m just curious how netgear support unbticked your router. Can you please the step you did when you bricked your router and what netgear support did?
Im also planning to try dumasOS this weekend and would like it avoid bricking my router if possible.
Thank you you in advance for sharing.
Yes, how did you brick your router. I tried this as well on mine and didn't brick mine. Did you first load the first modded file by Vortex? Also you need to be ethernet cable connected to the router when doing any FW updates. Do not use wireless.
Why am I seeing a 3 meg difference between btween NG firmware and Vortex verson? I was under the impression that only the header was chnaged.
XR500 firmware is 31.5mb on latest version.
Just reporting back that I have successfully install Xvortex’s modded FW for the NG R7800 and has been working great so Far. The R7800 is paired with the EX800 extender fro NG and no issues to report in that department.
Thank you Xvortex.
How did you get it installed?
Were you able to recover your router?
Used both dumaOS FW provided by xVortex.
.... and not planning to recover yet.
Read on Smallnetbuilder that this mod may pose a security threat according to Voxel. I quote he stated:
At this point I am rolling back to stock or even jumping onto Voxels mods instead considering I just experienced someone try to hack my bank account. Not only that the lack of VPN support is a concern. So rolling back to stock.
Its been fun. Thanks.
@davidm71, I'm pretty sure you didn't get hacked due to private router firmware. You entered your bank credentials on a non-htttps website.
@davidm71: the same goes for all custom firmwares made by random internet people (which includes XVortex, but also Voxel). This is why these random people hand out a source code (they are forced to do so by GPL anyway), to gain your trust. When the firmware binary is in doubt, you can review the source code and build on a trusted system, if you want.
As I was unable to either build Voxel's firmware from source (some packages not publicly available anymore) and XVortex didn't release the source code of his work, I lost interest in both firmwares. I've since invested my time in LEDE / OpenWRT, which I consider as the most secure solution among all available options for the R7800.
Problem is its a question of trust. Voxel's work seems more 'legitimate'
than xvortex though I am by far no expert. At this point I suspect everyone.
Maybe I have been reading one too many conspiracy theories that are
out there. Personally I really liked this XR7800 mod very much though
lack of vpn client support has all of a sudden become an issue. Voxel made
a convincing case though not to use it though his vpn client is slow according to
reports by other users. I have played around with OpenWrt but theres a learning curve
associated with using it. Not sure if I want it on my R7800.
Thanks
@XVortex Can you please provide us with the latest firmware? Thanks
@XVortex and it will be good if you could fix samba in the new firmware...

can we have the header changed please. Thanks XVortex
